It looks like an old version of the fungus called Chicken of the Woods. I used to see them when I lived in Germany, but not in Upminster. If you get one relatively young and yellow, you can eat it. Break into bits, parboil for 5 minutes, then coat in egg and breadcrumbs and fry. Quite good and easy to distinguish from other fungi. They often grow on willows.
That looks to me like a good example of heterobasidion annosum or bracket fungus.
Laetiporus sulphureus because of the yellow colour, fading now.
