I've never been, but it looks rather nice. A former colleague of mine used to commute from Lichfield to London every day. He used to time his commute to get one of the few direct Virgin trains, which only took around 1 hour 5 minutes. Not a commute I'd want to do though - and the season ticket was rather pricey, as you'd expect.
I spent a few hours wandering around there a couple of years back. I was surprised at its prosperity. Good cafe at the Cathedral (big cakes). The Erasmus museum is fascinating, well worth a visit to get the vibes of the Lunatics. It is interesting to compare the 'feel' of Johnson's birthplace with his home in Gough Square; and it was good to browse second-hand books in his old home and chat with the people there. You could always follow Johnson's walk/ride from Litchfield to London. Thanks for taking us out there DG.
Feeling very jealous now! Wish rail fares were that straightforward and reasonable all the time!!
I haven't been to Lichfield for about 30 years - it looks like a return visit is in order
