Blimey! Better start off then by pedalling westwards for - seemingly quite a long way.

Not an auspicious start.

Looking forward to the series, though: I've done the Brent Cross to Finsbury Park section a long time ago and did the Streatham - Crystal Palace chunk many times as a Sunday afternoon stroll when we used to live down that way.

These foot tunnel closures are a right royal pain.

The Greenwich Foot tunnel (the next nearest cycle crossing if Woolwich is not possible) is supposedly still open, but for reasons that Greenwich council never bother to explain it is frequently closed...
So for a Sunday morning cycle crossing you have to go as far west as the Rotherhithe (yech - fumes), the East London Line (bizarrely - as it is under National Rail rules, cycles seem to be allowed, though how you'd get one down the stairs at Wapping I have no idea) or Tower Bridge.

Back on topic - looking forward to the walk reports.

I suppose the idea is to have both these pedestrian tunnels in good order before 2012. Very unfortunate that they are both closed with very little alternatives. Especially if you arrive unaware of the fact.
Of course there were plans to build a bridge, but I believe Boris scrapped that scheme when he became Mayor.
Maybe the Cable Car crossing will get built.

A report has recently been published on improving the infrastructure of the Thames Estuary to help in the development of this area. More Thames crossings was one highlighted, along with transport links. Perhaps they should extend the study to include East London?

No need to envy the West; Albert Bridge (which I assume counts as 'west') has been up on bricks whilst a team of specialist restorers sip tea and consult back issues of The Lady magazine in hope of advice on how best to proceed.

Greg's reference to 'LBWF' points to H&F but if so, I wonder what they've done to annoy him. The new bins are quite funky and the traffic chaos around the tube station is hardly their fault.
