Great stuff.
It's a lovely area. I'm not surprised you found that out but I am surprised you were a little worried it didn't have too much to offer! Thank you for the absolutely fascinating info about Noel Coward's houses. |
(I was not worried it didn’t have too much to offer)

A great write up even without any pictures. I've got the reverse walk planned to the early May bank holiday. I'll do it without a timed train back so I'll linger where you couldn't.

Regarding the phone connection, the same thing happened to me while I was walking there. But, as a frequent traveller to Europe, I have a plan with no roaming charges.
I suspect given your worries about using data, if you looked you could probably find something that gives you more data for less than you pay with EE and free use while in Europe. (Sent from my phone while in Italy.) |
We have the most frequent train service ever… yet a fool and his money. Penny rich…

Looking forward to the photos at some future date

I visited a lovely sunny Canterbury for the first time yesterday thanks to the Network Weekend deal. You're right about the temperature being several degrees cooler close to the Kent coast... luckily I had an extra jumper in my rucksack but I was amazed by other (mainly younger) folk who were dressed for a summer day on the Riviera. You were lucky getting tickets that allowed you a 10 mile hike because the earliest departure from London Bridge that I could find was at 12:43.

So much history in the area, but some of it woefully exploited - Drop Redoubt, Roman Painted House, all the other buried Roman stuff, etc.
There is a beach - Was the tide in? It is Langdon btw. |
Never been charged for foreign mobile usage, but was on a train near Corrour last year and got a message from Vodafone saying "Welcome To Guernsey"
|
I also used the £5 deal, to visit Canterbury, and a can confirm that the icy wind penetrated inland. I was luckier than @richard as I had an 0915 departure from London Bridge. Brilliant day out.
|
We must have crossed, as I walked from Deal to Dover yesterday, on the same train deal.
|
Deal was a lovely day out yesterday. Our Javelin left Ashford for the coast standing room only.
|
Superb description; thank you. Almost don’t need the pix, though they’ll be very welcome when they arrive; and even a day-trip to France (at least for your phone) thrown in as well, albeit at a non-negotiable cost.
|
A nice walk that, and more interesting than the Thanet section of the coastal path.
Dover's Museum is worth a stop if you have an hour to spare, to see the Bronze Age Boat. |
Lovely. I have done the first half of that walk to St. Margaret's Bay. Inspired to go and do the rest to Deal.
|
Definite inspiration for a visit thanks. Haven’t been to that area since I camped at Kingsdown with Scouts around 50 years ago.
|
You could well have heard a skylark. I heard one this week, out walking in Berkshire with keen birders. I might not have noticed the skylark's song had one of the birders not turned my attention to it.
|
Great walk. One to add to my 'sunny day' list!
All I know about Kent is that my granddad was hit by shrapnel while stationed there in WW2 and when he awoke to the sight of a nurse in her starched white-winged cap peering down at him, thought an angel had come to take him home!! Skylarks in Cudham this week too! |
fabulous walk, shame about the direction but Deal's the better end point. I'm not sure if this is good or bad news but, having done Kent's coast, this section was my favourite, with the possible exception of going the other way from Dover.
|
Great article, but slightly surprising Cinque Port phraseology as Dover has always been a head port whereas Deal is merely a limb of Sandwich. So maybe more a case of from a Cinque Port and ferry port to a limb of the Cinque Ports Confederation.

You chose, perhaps wisely, not to make the clichéd observation that the pier you touched on is made of concrete.

I went to the Fan Bay shelter last summer! It was incredible. I'd really recommend Dover castle too. I'm due another trip!
