Merry Christmas dg.
this is great, I intend to listen to many of them later today, also a chance for me to see the videos which will be new to me because I don't watch tv.
but two minor quibbles...the ones in 93 and 94 surely aren't Christmas songs, neither mentions anything seasonal, one has bells in and the other is about love in general.
5 in this year's top 40, all re-entries from the last century.
I wonder why you have only gone back as far as 1970. There were popular "Christmas" songs well before then.
"White Christmas" and "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!" just 2 from numerous other songs.
Following on from amber's comment, the video for 'The Power of Love' does tell the story of the Nativity, even if they lyrics don't. But was there anything specifically Christmassy about 'There's No One Quite like Grandma', apart from its teeth-rotting saccharinity?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
'They lyrics' should of course read 'the lyrics'. It's been a long year.
Disappointed that £1 Fish only made #29.
Merry Christmas, DG
Is Stay Another Day a Christmas song? Far as I can see, it's just bellish sounds in the background
Why did you stop at 1999? Or is that tomorrows post?

Apparantly Stay another day was written by Tony Mortimer in memory of his brother who commited suicide

Also Bohemian Rhapsody not a christmas song but twice number 1 at christmas in 1975 and 1991
indeed, "Stay Another Day" was never recorded/intended as a Christmas song. but a record producer heard it and though "Hey let's add some sleighbells, snow in the video, and BOOM! Christmas song".

also, i was GOING to say "Hey, you've missed out all Christmas songs since 2000!", when of course - cleverly - i then realised that you hadn't. :-)
Happy Christmas, dg! Remembering the tinge of sadness the season holds for you, I wish you happy memories of Christmases past and a warm and loving Christmas present.
Isn't The Power of Love the tune to the John Lewis TV ad (also on Youtube?)
