Don't worry, I'm not going to make a habit of reporting on the Bow roundabout roadworks every Saturday, only if they continue to be suboptimal and increasingly disruptive.
|
By coincidence, I went under Bow roundabout yesterday for the first time. Travelling from’t north to’t sarf, sat nav suggested the A406 and the Blackwall Tunnel as a large time saving over Dartford.
I did mentally give a wave as we passed under without delay. Fair made my day to be in the orbit of one of the best bloggers there is. |
The BBC is wrong to suggest that low-level cycle lights were first installed in the UK ten years ago in the article you linked to. I can clearly remember these in York in the early 1980s!
What was a first was placing them on road exits which cyclists shared with other traffic and had an advanced stop line for cyclists. Here, there purpose was different (and a first in the UK). It was to give the cyclists an early start ahead of other traffic as the article makes clear later on. |

The internal displays on the 25 always say "City Thameslink, Holborn Viaduct" despite the blind on the front of the bus saying "St Paul's".
Similarly on the 425, the blind says "Clapton, Nightingale Road" but the internal display says "Clapton, Kenninghall Road". Nightingale Road is a turning off Kenninghall Road, but it would make more sense for the display to match the destination on the front of the bus to avoid confusion. I suspect that there are other routes with the same issue. |
The problem with "road closed ahead" is it's used nowadays to mean either "this road closed" or "a side road closed", and there's no telling which.
|
So the cones, etc have improved public transport speed at the expense of cars? I suggest they are made permanent
|
No, closing the Bow Flyover bus stop has improved public transport speed, at the expense of some passengers.
|
And in other news.. a non car-owner makes a hyper-vigilant hyper-local study of roadworks, and concludes that he wouldn't have done it like that.
|
I do hope you continue to report on the Bow roundabout roadworks. My money's on it becoming another Bus Stop M or Bow Road Station refurbishment saga.
|
To quote ‘Private Eye’. this one will run and run…
I hope you will be able to give us all regular updates. Thank you. |
The St. Paul's display is because the buses are all temporarily curtailed to the gyratory rather than City Thameslink due to roadworks on Farringdon Street. The iBus and destination blinds do normally match and say City Thameslink, Holborn Viaduct. Not sure why though the iBus hasn't been updated accordingly.

Have you managed to identify what it is that they're doing - and are there any plans available? A cursory Google search returns mostly results from 2016, unfortunately.

Went through at lunchtime today. Half the traffic lights not working - not sure whether by design or if they've developed a fault.

FOI request reveals full plans here.
