You may have spotted on your journey that the semaphore signals have all been replaced with coloured lights in the last few months, and the signal box at Reedham Junction is now disused. Perhaps you were impressed by the new train whisking you along in rather more comfort than previously. It's been quite a change on the line in the last year or so.
Looking forward to this!
I'm a bit sad about the pub.
Anyone travelling between Reedham and Great Yarmouth would also have been inconvenienced by the line closure.
I did a similar trip but it was probably about 10 years ago now. I remember being the only one to get off at Berney Arms and I don't think the guard was too pleased because the train was already late and he had almost got to the end of the train checking tickets without anyone requesting Berney Arms - they were hoping not having to stop there would make up some time.

Even then the windmill was I think only open for pre-booked appointments or something like that. It certainly wasn't generally open at specific times.

I was there too early in the day for the pub to have been open. In hindsight perhaps I should have hung about because I don't think I'll get the chance to go there again.

Back in 2016 a family had to be rescued from the station by lifeboat after the last train failed to run. There being no road access I guess that was the only option. I would have walked but I guess in the evening for a family with children walking around there after dark with no idea where you are going is not a good idea.
I know that section of the river well. Many years ago was sailing a 4-berth Japonica Gaff-rig, when a squall hit us such that we were uncontrollably catching up the motor cruisers ahead of us (no method of emergency dropping the sail in those days). Had to yell at them to get out of the way otherwise we would have ended up stuck on the mud banks! Scary...
The amount of the times I've been Hemsby and have never heard of Horsey. Sounds like a cut place to go..
Horsey. The destination on my usual leg of the Round Norfolk Relay. Lessingham to Horsey, a nice 7.52 miles. Just about losing the light as I arrive.
I was fascinated by the story of a rail replacement boat!
The bike racks at Berney Arms station have always intrigued me. In the absence of anyone living in the area, what sort of journey would involve leaving a bike there, going off by train then coming back later to collect the bike?

I do wish someone would reopen the pub. A marvellous destination for a day out, and the train times make it feasible from London, unlike other stations such as Shippea Hill.
I have been in Berney Arms windmill, many years ago though. And also have crossed the wildness of Breydon Water nearby in a 4-berth Japonica, two ways on two occasions. Quite hairy at times"!

I have never thought of Gt Yarmouth as "civilisation", exactly, although found Horsey quite wonderful.
Excellent am enjoying !
Had a very enjoyable virtual day out too.
The Northern Distributor Road has now been officially named Broadland Northway. Ugh. Whoever designed the roundabouts needs shooting!
(chuckle)
Ahhh, DG...as a North Norfolk boy (and ex Roy's employee) this is heaven to me. It's been the first Easter in 12 years I've not been back home to celebrate with my family, so thanks for the virtual trip back.
This is all too convincing. We'll never believe you've actually been somewhere again.
Did you know that Mundesley is famous for being where your mother learnt to swim (while camping there as a young girl guide).
You must have (virtually) driven by Waxham Great Barn without stopping for a cuppa and a look round.

An accidental discovery for us on a wet day out a few years ago. With a very detailed audio tour too.
Checked in on the blog late today and delighted to see a trip round North Norfolk. Bringing back nice memories on a difficult anniversary date.

Thank you.
