Another quirky sight from South Hampstead's platforms is Chiltern Railways' trains passing by as they emerge from tunnels on the tracks into and out of Marylebone just long enough to cross over the West Coast and Overground lines. It's quite surreal to see a tunnel so high up - and some are proper trains with a locomotive at the front and rear.
I’ve always felt that Stamford Hill’s lack of use was also related to it being in zone 3 whereas the road outside (Amhurst Park) is in zone 2. It certainly affected me when I lived there - why pay extra when the 253 to Manor House or the buses to the City were covered by a cheaper ticket.
Whats the significance of the additional diamond hatching along the edge of the platforms at Stamford Hill?
This post could have been titled "Emerson Park and lamer"; a missed opportunity I feel.
This post is classic DG - quirky social observation with a linking transport theme. Perhaps response to it is limited because it seems to be the end of a much-enjoyed special week.

Sadly, blatant fare dodgers like the one mentioned here are, if not an everyday sight, depressingly un-rare.
I used to live (very) near South Hampstead and work (fairly) near Euston and then (in silverlink days) would sometimes commute that way. South Hampstead is so close to several other stations - Kilburn High Road, Kilburn Park, Finchley Road and the three West Hampstead stations as well as the more obvious Swiss Cottage are all really rather nearby, so its usage is likely to remain a bit niche.
I commute from Stamford Hill every day and the station really could use some TLC from TfL. The old station building (on the right from the picture in the article) is being held up on the bank with temporary supports and looks ready to crumble.

One of the shelters is closed and is being used to store building supplies. On the northbound platform the roof on the shelter fell in a few months ago and the entrance has been covered up with a bits of red and white tape ever since, rather than being repaired. As the blog notes, these are regularly pulled away so that people can sit in the seats in the shelter.

Zone 2 would seem a more natural fit for Stamford Hill, especially with Manor House just down the road. I suspect it's too forgotten-about for anyone to make a change.

The 08.10 towards Liverpool Street has to be among least punctual service on the Overground. It is constantly at least a minute late, and on the very rare days (I'm talking one-in-20) where it's bang on time - it usually sits outside Bethnal Green and ends up late anyway. I know punctuality isn't measured by the minute, but it is so, so rare for this train to be on time.
Amazing to see though - that even Emerson Park's usage has, apparently, more than doubled, since the takeover. Which leads me to wonder whether it was underestimated before or overestimated now.
Headstone Lane is currently 10= (with Clapham Junction) of all my Oyster touch-in and -outs for this year.
@Stamford Hill Zone

Looks like the 08.10 train is deliberately late to avoid standing outside Bethnal Green and it simply doesn't fit well with other services. LO should consider re-timing this train.
Friend of mine wouldn't use stamford hill out of principle because he believed it should be in zone 2 . He lived 20m away from platform ....
Until the station was redecorated in Network South East days, the risers of the footbridge at Headstone Lane still advertised LMS Removals!
Headstone Lane was opened by the LNWR in 1913 so the building is probably original pre=WW1
