I thought it was a bit surprising that you wrote last week about Chaldon church without mentioning the surrounding area. This explains it.

This is without doubt the best part of the LOOP south of the river. In summer I do most of this section many times, starting and finishing the journey by convenient buses. Never had a problem with the horses though.

What is even more incredible is that just about every walk fanning out from Farthing Down (west, south or east) is to me either interesting or scenic and/or has a lovely pub as a potential stopping point. There is almost always convenient frequent public transport nearby to get you back again if necessary. And I am lucky enough to live nearby.

If you had walked a short distance south a bit from Chaldon church you would have linked up with the North Downs Way and dramatic views over the North Downs and M25.

Of all six walks this week, this has to be my favourite. Apart from the horses.

Looked at your photo link before the comments and wondered when I saw the sign post if Pedantic of Purley woold comment!
Thanks to both of you for some great suggestions - Croydon always conjures up Purley Way rather than countryside but the whole town seems to be built on hills anyway so will just venture farther out for some greener ones.
Enjoying the walks DG - thanks for the "Summer Special " after all !

I wish the Corporation would sell these out of town parks and actually do something for City residents, ie build a primary school. Other Councils provide these sorts of services to their residents instead of providing huge parks and forests to countrysiders in zone 6.
