Thank you. Absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to explore the Shard myself.
Gert'cha, making me laugh at this time of the morning, whatever next...fabulous.
Ha ha (especially 'It's a magical space').

They let me slip in after dark on the 14th, there was snow (a bit) on the roof, and London at night looked pretty good. I wouldn't mind seeing the view on a clear sunny day, not sure if I'll be invited back though.
So when are you REALLY going up? :-)
I can't wait!
I've been in that Cafe Nero and I never realised that it was in the Shard.
So on a clear day you really can see the retail channel from the Shard? Oh my ears and whiskers...
Ho ho! But surely they offered you a free ticket? You declined? Do they make bloggers promise to write a review? They can't expect the residents of Southwark to write approving blog entries.

Just trying to square your principled position of not accepting freebies or special access, with you writing about the restaurant offer in the Evening Standard. Is that ok because anyone can take it up?
Nobody's ever asked me to write about the Evening Standard's dining offer. Equally, nobody's ever offered me a free ticket up the Shard. And that's good. Maybe the PR folk are finally learning.
It makes me so proud that I was inside the Shard before DG! It's a good thing we needed some buckets of M&S sweets in the office.
Wow - I unwittingly visited the M&S highlight of the Shard weeks ago ;-)
Oh you really had me going there!!! Brilliant!
I visited the West Cornwall Pasty Company a couple of weeks ago (mmm, pasties!) and had no idea I was *in* the Shard! I thought I was just at London Bridge Station! So pleased I can say I've been *in* the Shard, if not up it! :D
I was up there on Sunday as part of the Southwark free ticket thing.

It's high & windy. Perhaps worth a tenner to visit, not £25.
Nice one DG!
I think it's overpriced but I will probably go up once and enjoy the view as I have a suspicion it will soon get closed for "security reasons" as other viewing decks in London have.
Hmmm. Obviously £100 (for an unbooked visit) might sound a bit steep - compared with, say, the London Eye - but, hey... try to think of it as probably being better value than anything you might pay to go round the London Dungeon
suddenly the Air Line looks cheap !
I've been past London Bridge often and see scores of people queuing for the Dungeon. What's actually in it? Is it worth what must be an hour plus wait?
It'll be an academic opportunity for me, even if they gave me a tenner. You could not get me to exit the lift, in fact I suspect I would have to undergo a painful superglue-like operation to prise me from the lift's wall on return to the ground floor, as my sweaty hand will have merged with the paint....

I can't even use the high walkway at Gatwick airport. My wife leads me on by the hand while my eyes remain firmly shut.
Isn't the Mercury City Tower in Moscow the tallest building in Europe?
Mercury City Tower is about 30m (100feet) or so taller. The Shard isn't even the tallest structure in England
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emley_Moor_transmitting_station) but it is the tallest habitable building in the EU - at least until Mr Farage gets his way!
...the London Dungeon...
What's actually in it?
Less than you could possibly imagine
Is it worth what must be an hour plus wait?
In a word, NO.
I don't need to go up The Shard now that you have described it so perfectly.
God bless M&S!
It was the last day for the
London Dungeon in Tooley St today...

They are selling spare props at a car boot sale...
£100!?!

wow - rip-off Britain in action.
Just noticed Britain at War Experience in Tooley Street closed on 6th Jan as well @touruk_co_uk on the Twitter thingy
When I was a kid in the 80's I went to the London Dungeon and my memory is that it was a quite fun and not too expensive place to visit. I think somewhere along the way it changed into a ghastly tourist rip-off. If you are ever in the area with time to kill, though, I can highly recommend the Clink Museum.
See you could have written a story about London. Instead, you just wrote a negative experience from a lobby.

2012 truely has gone.
@ HowardGWR - I do understand how you feel as I'm much the same. It's why I have not braved the Dangleway. However I have forced myself up the Empire State Building, the WTC in NYC and the CN Tower in Toronto. I was terrified - especially of the glass floor in the CN Tower - but I am glad I endured the terror and managed to prise myself off the walls in order to see the amazing views. Not sure I can justify the price for the Shard but the views do look amazing.
I emailed the Shard and I was disappointed that they will not allow photographers to use a tripod - I wanted a nice night/dusk view.
Oh well, at least that saves me the £25 a ticket costs!
As I think I intimated in my post, I wouldn't have gone up if I'd had to pay. It is very expensive for what it is - that's why I wrote another post the following day reminding people of all the lovely outdoor spots where you can get panoramic views of London...

The sticker shock for a family of four runs to about £90 - that's rather steep, particularly if the weather's poor like it was on the day I went up
If you want a good view go up the Monument. Ok it is not as high as the Shard but at three quid admission it is a lot cheaper.
Those people saying they would pay about a tenner to climb the Shard might be interested to know you can go up the marginally taller Landmark Tower in Hanoi, Vietnam for the equivalent of 7 pounds. Admittedly it's not as practical for a day-trip.
I love that someone who considers himself a writer, completely dismisses the beauty of a view never seen. And for free! What a waste! Just for info purposes, cafe Nero, m&s etc are London bridge station and not endorsed. I don't accuse your nose for making your soul ugly :) men with pen power should dance as they scrawl. Me thinks someone hasn't been laid in a while.
