On Erith "It's not twinned with anywhere, but it does have a suicide pact with Dagenham" Linda Smith

I think there is a similar bicycle gate. Somewhere around Ruislip Lido.

I keep meaning to visit Lesnes Abbey. I can see the Belvedere ridge from the end of my road, enticing me to make the trip across the river and go explore. I could do that tomorrow...

All walks should end at tea stalls. There ought to be a law ...

DG, this series of articles is you at your very best - unearthing these hidden gems of the capital. You should get official recognition from the GLA...

Keep it up!

but the view from shooters hill tea hut is worth the slog up the hill

you managed to get from lesnes abbey across east wickham open space and all without being abused by the local feral yoblets???

Oxleas Meadows is also a big dogging spot.

So I'm told.

Lesnes Abbey is great - or what's left of it is, rather.

And Erith....not beautiful? Well, no, but it is bracing and (very much in its own way) rather romantic. (The stretch of Thames east of there to the Dart estuary is fantastic and wild, too.). And, although it was rebuilt (very much for the worse) in the 1960s, most of the most hideous buildings were pulled down in the 1990s, and what replaced them is, while not out of the ordinary, at least not longer utterly hideous.

And of course East Wickham open space was formerly known (as the terrible pub next to it still is) as "Fanny On The Hill." Nothing to do with dogging, though, as far as I know.

This has been bugging me -- how do you pronounce Lesnes?

Lez-ness

Fanny on the Hill = Minge on the Mound
