Er... 1936 marked the death of George V. George VI died in 1952.

Thanks, DG. The Lido looks wonderful, and the All Network Downlander is a great tip. I feel a trip to the south coast coming on...

Great photos of the Art Deco swimming pool, I love Art Deco buildings. But what struck me was the houses in the background, white with green roof tiles. I had always had memories of buildings like that from my early childhood, I thought that I had mixed up France with England.

After your 4 hour walk to the Palace Pier (now named Brighton Pier) you still had a 15-20 minute walk uphill from the pier to the station, or maybe you took a bus for that final leg.
That cliftop walk from Peacehaven to Brighton has lovely views on a summer evening as the sun is beginning to go down.

How about heating the lido
Hampton Pool is full summer and winter
Swimming through the mist on a freezing day is amazing

Rottingdean may have its Kipling connections, but the village's real celeb was the artist Edward Burne-Jones. He designed some of the church's windows, and his ashes are in the churchyard. Also in the churchyard are the authors Angela Thirkell (Colin MacInnes mother) and Enid Bagnold ('National Velvet'). Be careful, this village has a one-way stretch of road that can easily catch you out!

Civilisation? Peacehaven?

Gilly Dean makes an excellent point. Can she be persuaded to make it to whoever runs the Lido?

Having swum at Hampton Pool a few years ago on a frosty Christmas morning I am pleased that the pool has stayed in business since the council sold it off. Thet council left the nearby Twickenham baths to decay, and Teddington pool was enclosed.
I think the pool at Saltdean Lido is larger than Hampton, and being in a more exposed location the heating costs could be high.
I think Hampton has had a lot of support from the fairly wealthy local residence, which may not be the case at Saltdean

And why didnt you visit the excellent cafe at Roedean by the golf course? Worth the trip.

Why? Because the cafe wasn't labelled "Excellent cafe, Debster says so." Next time...

Great set of photos. Just a small point - the beach stretching from Newhaven to Seaford Head is shingle not sand. A small stretch of sand is exposed at dead low tide. The only sandy beach in East Sussex is inside Newhaven harbour on the West side, sadly closed to the public.
Nestling under the Fort ramparts, immediately below where you took the photo of Saeford Bay is a row of eight houses, one of which is my home. I therefore am truly blessed to see that view from my lounge and bedrooms on a daily basis!

There appeared to be remnants at low tide of the trackbed of the structure carrying the Volks railway over the sea on stilts between Black Rock and Rottingdean. It must have been an awesome piece of Victorian engineering dottiness.
