I always consider NT to be stately homes and EH to be castles.
I went there on a beautiful sunny day in May, but otherwise had a very similar experience. I agree that it feels much more NT than EH - perhaps they could swap it for a castle somewhere. The only bit I didn’t enjoy (other than the inevitably disrupted trains) was the walk from the station. It isn’t actually dangerous - except when you have to cross the road - but with the high volume of really fast-moving traffic it feels like it is.
Ooh, grew up in a tedious village about 5 miles from Audley End. I remember the huge yew hedge most.

We had a short break in Saffron Walden last year bagging local county tops amongst other things. The whole area seemed more beautiful than I remembered as a child.
Audley is an important site as part of Garden Organic, of which I used to be a member. Haven't been there.
