I remember going there as a kid for day trips to the seaside. That was only about 25 years ago and it hasn't changed much from then by the look of it. I also remeber a picture of the Pet Shop Boys sitting in front of that cafe in a copy of Smash hits magazine.

I remember holidays and day-trips there in the 80s. I still return every year (coincidentally on the same weekend you chose this time) for the Canvey Radio Rally.

Living under under sea level is no big deal, I'm from the Netherlands. Hell we built a whole country; of 15 million.

I enjoy discovering London here. So much better than being in a crowded, smelly city (that applies to any city) and if and when l go down to London l have several ideas of where l would like to see and not see. Much better than any guide book.

Michael, there is also a big Dutch community on Canvey.

Dr Feelgood, first live band I ever saw, at the Kursaal in Southend in 1975. At 14 it was the most exciting night of my life. Later on we used to go to the Goldmine (nightclub) on Canvey. It was an exciting place to go in the seventies.

Well, it was the Dutch who drained Canvey (and much of the other marshlands of Essex). There is a museum in a Dutch Cottage on the island, and lots of streets (and at least one school) there have dutch names, too.

But, yes, great, this is exactly the sort of thing I read dg for. (And I too couldn't find the path to the east at Canvey Point last time I was there, either) Fantastic.

(And the path around the - almost uninhabited - western half of the coast around Canvey - is in its way really quite breathtaking.)

It's definitely a place apart, though: a lot of the people who live there seem to be really loyal to the place; and I think it is more close-knit than most places in the south-east too.

My candidate for least inviting destination was Sheerness-on-sea. Does Canvey top even that?

Canvey is way nicer than Sheerness

No doubt Sam Beckett would have found this a most amenable spot. A bracing sea breeze, an endless selection of pebbles and the occasional useful board.

:0)

I hate to sound judgmental, but... what a strange place to choose to live.

My understanding (a contentious one as it is) was that a lot of people moved to Canvey in recent years to get away from all the 'scary blacks*' in East London. With that in mind I've never been completely comfortable in Canvey.

Sheerness is definitely a less appealing destination than Canvey. But sticking with Sheppey, my candidate would be Leysdown.

[* by which I mean any race group you like other than WASP]

I strongly believe that if you want to see a British seaside resort for what it is, go see it in the middle of winter when there are no tourists around and all the tat shops are shut. good post DG.

Our family had a caravan for a few years at Kings Caravan Park. I spent many an entertaining holiday there as a teenager in the 80s without adult supervision. Ah, for those halcyon days!

Interesting post about Canvey Island.

Playing Minigolf around the UK from January to November I get to see many seasides both in and out of season and like many British Seaside resorts it needs a bit of a spruce up!

The Crazy Golf could definitely do with a re-furb/re-build too. It's a shame to see such a great Arnold Palmer Crazy Golf go to waste.

It's almost as bad as what happened to the 'West' Course in Southend-on-Sea - it laid derelict for years and then was dug up!
