The last time I watched it all was the year that Lorde sang a wonderful tribute to Bowie - 2016 probably. Dipped in toward the end last night to test my suspicion that it's no longer for me. Suspicion confirmed.
DG, thank you so much for that description of what seemed to be an evening to remember ( or forget, delete as necessary).
It has saved me and 'imself from regretting that we hadn't checked the tv listings properly and frittered away our precious time (at our age) by watching a film on dvd instead. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
Good heavens! That is exactly what I would have said/thought had I watched it. Except I didn't.

Thank you for making the event 1000 times more entertaining than, er.. the event.
Cue "I don't read diamond geezer for the politics" comments in 5...4...3...
I thought Randy Crawford was a guy and Lewis Capaldi was Doctor Who. I don’t think I’d much care for this show.
Very amusing, 21.58 ' ... music no longer sounds anything like it used to ...' strikes a chord with me, but then at rising 74 I (with a few exceptions like Springsteen) have been saying that for half a century. Is it 'old foginess' or something deeper? As time goes by and the repertoire of recorded music grows, it becomes harder to establish both a new unique voice and style because so much has been done before. Similarly as one's music collection grows it must be harder for a new artist to break in as what one acquired years back had a greater opportunity to establish itself in one's psyche because there was less to compete with then. Elvis lives!
Thanks for watching this so we didn't have to.

"A 'Thanks for watching this so we didn't have to' comment will appear before 9am."
Yay! A name check for Yootha Joyce.
"Harry Styles applauds politely dressed in a yellow jacket and magenta neckerchief that Yootha Joyce would have been proud of."

This is the best sentence I have read this year, anywhere.
I don't watch the Brits anymore, but when I did years ago it was most memorable for:

1. The hilarious 1989 Brits disaster;
2. Annie Lennox winning the Best British Female Award seemingly year after year..
Oddly, I find your descriptions of naff corners of London more interesting than naff corners of the tv schedule.
The mere presence of Jack Whitehall as host was quite enough to ensure I went out of my way to avoid the coverage of the event. I find his fame inexplicable; deeply unfunny, predictable and unusually annoying.
I'm not sure I've ever watched it - can't stand these mutual celeb back-patting episodes!

Consequently:
1. "Lewis Capaldi sings the one song of the night even your nan's heard"
I have never heard of him, never mind his song!

2. Why does every performance have to come with a mass writhing of bodies? (God I sound like my dad 40 years ago!)

3. I've heard of Yootha Joyce!
As a dreadful music pedant with multiple sense of humour bypasses, may I point out for the sake of strict accuracy that:
1. The first BRITS awards were actually in the last real year of punk, 1977.
2. The host was the esteemed Micheal Aspel. David Jacobs was old hat at least by 1970.
3. As an American, Randy Crawford -fine singer though she was- would have been illegible for the Best Female award. This was actually bestowed upon Shirley Bassey.

There. I feel better now.
just another party for the hasbeens and wannabes.
Strangely, this account now makes me want to know who actually did win!
In the interests of accuracy:
1. I said these were the 40th BRIT Awards, and they were.
2. I said the BRITs have been held annually since 1982, and they have.
3. Despite her American nationality, Randy Crawford won Best British Female Solo Artist in 1982.
David Jacobs presenting in 1982 does make it feel like another era. Baffled that Cliff won best male in 1982, ahead of Shakin Stevens who had several massive hits in 1981, but even more confused that the American Randy Crawford (whose voice I loved) won the best British female solo artist

Paul McCartney won best British male in 1983 incidentally, but then most of the brilliant post punk, new wave and synth pop acts were groups rather than solo performers
In the interests of further accuracy...when I wrote that Randy Crawford would have been 'illegible', I meant of course that she would have been 'ineligible'. But you read my mind.
Superb recap of Dave's performance. It was truly phenomenal.
I watched some of it but I wish I hadn't. I lasted until a somewhat out of it Harry Styles announced his date was his sister whilst Lizzo tried to take over the interview. At that point I made my excuses and turned off.
Re: the Lizzo comment "Her supremely commanding stage presence distracts from her songwriting ability." I can't work out if this is genuine praise or cutting sarcasm. Not that I have a clue who she is beyond a few publicity photos on t'net.
Graham : Ha ha! Ditto. My initial reaction was to treat it as sarcasm - but then, I am a naturally sarcastic person and what goes around ...

However, on second reading, I saw it from the other direction (like those drawings of stairs that you can't tell whether they're going up or down). Notwithstanding, the needle has finally swung safely back to 'sarcasm' again! 😊
