In the early 1950's my parents used to take me on holiday to Newhaven. The area between the fort and the cricket ground was farmland in those days.(Houses now)
I remember playing around the old fort and exploring the tunnels. Great fun for a lad. I have not been inside since it was sold and became a tourist attraction.
Also in those days there were regular ferries crossing over to Dieppe, much larger ships than are used today on this route.
The beach is sand inside the breakwater with the tide was out. I think this beach is closed at present because it is now owned by a French company and health and safety matters have arisen.
The walk to the end of the breakwater was always pleasant.
There were many fishing boats coming into the harbour back then and fresh fish could be purchased directly from them.
The town had a cinema.
Whenever I go back to Newhaven I think back to those days in the '50s, as the place has been developed and built up now with lots of apartments and houses.

i had been told that this was the Olympic blog of London. where is today's Olympic post? most dissapointed... :D

I very much hope that the readers who complained "I very much enjoy DG's geographical and transport themed posts, and hope they will become more prominent again in future" are feeling happier now.

I suspect they are.

I didn't complain as I enjoy all DG's post but I do especially enjoy DG's geographical and transport themed posts.

Especially this one as one of my best friends lives in the flat directly under Newhaven Fort (overlooking the Marina) and yet I have never been.

I will after this though. I promise.

Thanks DG I knew you wouldn't let me down! I wonder why the barges chose Newhaven for their overwintering?

Off-topic, but...
