Glad you didn't let the rainy day dampen your spirits.
Good to see Liverpool from a less touristy perspective.
Did you go on the "Ferry Across the Mersey" to Woodside?

I see the dereliction that was the fate of Festival Gardens for many years after the initial shine wore off, (and, at the other end of the A57, the sorry state of the Joseph Banks Conservatory at a similar age) and wonder what the Garden Bridge will look like twenty years on.
I remember visiting the Liverpool Garden Festival as a boy. The Yellow Submarine was a highlight as you could climb inside and fool around. Your comment about the maturity of the trees is interesting - I recall the site being a very open space with orderly, small planting and sculptures / features to explore standing out easily.

These days my kids play with the rather battered Lledo model T van branded with the festival logo, which was my souvenir of the trip.
Wot? All the way to Birkenhead Park and you didn't meet up with MerseyTart?
Ah, Paddy's Wigwam. I used to walk past it when heading up to Abercrombie Square to go to lectures.
