Fantastic news! A trip to the Channel Islands for my 100th birthday sounds like a great idea!!
I’ll pass this info on to my great grandchildren but where in the world would we have to go to see a total eclipse in our lifetimes?
Here's a list of total solar eclipses over the next decade (there are seven of them).

Locally your best chance is on 12 August 2026, perhaps in Reykjavik, northern Spain or Majorca. The sun will only be 91% obscured in London.
Great - booking my holiday in Majorca tomorrow for exactly 7 years time!!
Book somewhere with a clear view of the western horizon, because in Majorca the total eclipse happens quarter of an hour before sunset and will be very low in the sky.
What a nice coincidence - I have a great photo of my extended family wearing eclipse glasses, all looking skywards in Cornwall, which I'll take to today's gathering which is taking place closer to home. It will be fun to show the young kids in the photo to their children.
I rendezvoused with friends at a motorway junction West of Metz for the 1999 eclipse. This allowed us to head, west, east and south depending on the weather forecast. We wisely chose to head west and gradually the clouds cleared after 60+ miles. We had already pulled over once as the sun first became occluded, and then pulled into a rest area for the main event.

It was the most spectacular thing I have ever seen, and the various phases of moving into, during and out of totality have their own magic. It is also the feelings you experience as the weather changes so watching one on TV is not the same. Our friends have been able to witness further eclipses in China and Russia, and I urge everyone to head for Spain in 2026 and choose your spot wisely. You will not be disappointed.
n.b. You may be disappointed.
You're never going to get over the disappointment of 1999 are you? ;)
I too was in Cornwall on that day in 1999. I had remembered the date since I had been in school thirty years before and made sure I got to Cornwall only to be very disappointed. I tried ten years later in Shanghai … cloudy again. But this year in Chile I saw my first eclipse and it was a wonderful experience. See one if you can!
One thing worth noting: Boris won't be around for any of these to be able to turn it into a political event.
My inner pedant is very pleased to see that you've placed the year 2600 in the 26th century :)
I was in Falmouth in 1999, it was sunny up until 5 minutes before the eclipse, cloudy during the event and sunny for the rest of the day - still an amazing atmosphere.
I wish I'd been in Cornwall in 1999!
Instead I watching the TV reports of a very rare tornado touching down 30 miles from where we lived in America, while awaiting the birth of my daughter, and knew nothing of it at all, because out-of-nation news wasn't really a thing there.
The big one they had a year or 2 ago - and I was back in the UK!!
