I commute from St Albans and for me it still is just turn up and go. There will be a train within about 15 minutes. Fast or slow makes a bit of a difference, but seldom enough to make it worth waiting very long for a fast.

The people in Harpenden have it really tough, though. More trains passing through the station, but fewer stopping. And some of them cancelled in the morning peak yesterday too. Ouch. Season ticket over 3k.

But there were still several northbound cancellations on the board at Farringdon at about 8pm last night.
I did work out that visiting friends via the new East Croydon <-> Finsbury Park link didn't actually shave off much time. But it does remove changing at Victoria, which is always going to be a huge point in favour.
The core section (Blackfriars to St Pancras) has had a turn up and go frequency for a while, hasn't it?

Even during the London Bridge works, for East Croydon to St Pancras, although a train was scheduled every 15 minutes or so, you just had to turn up whenever because services could be anywhere between on time and 15 minutes later (or up to 30 minutes late, but then you just get the earlier one).
Oh dear. I wish you would have avoided the phrase 'finally came good'!!

Still, I do like buses.

The platforms for the various lines at Kings Cross St Pancras are so far apart that the quickest route is probably dictated by which happens to be nearest.
