A good read, thanks. There'd be an interesting compare and contrast to write on rivers of major cities.

And so to Starbucks et al., inauthentic and tax-avoidining, time for us to stop me thinks. Time for tea hoses to reappear.
Suspect you're not the biggest Bond aficionado? It is Spectre (not Skyfall) where Bond and Villain have car chase along the riverside. If you'd seen the film, you'd know they get there by driving down steep steps (destroying two of the stunt cars in the process - I think they used 10 stunt cars in all).

dg writes: Busted, dammit.

Agree with your general theme. Whereas the Thames here and the Seine in Paris are absolutely at the core of the city, Rome seems uninterested in the Tiber, hiding it away in a culvert.
€1? Yes it's the same in Spain. You've all been had.
I see the Tiber has cleaned up nicely since I was in Roma bat in the 1970's.

Your travel log has made me want to go back next year.
Like T Bore above, as a conspicuous consumer I'd welcome the return of "tea hoses" ..
And the other culinary delight is Panettone, a delicious soft cake (bread?) containing fruit or pieces of soft chocolate. It's nothing like what we know as fruit cake, or chocolate cake - miles better. I believe that the best in Rome can be procured in the old Jewish ghetto area from s shop owned by two grumpy old ladies. I can't vouch for that personally, but I can swoon over the cake.

I recevied a Panettone in a tin as a Christmas pressy last year, brought back by family visiting Italy. If anybody is reading this - hint, hint - it went down very well !
Stayed just round the corner from that Gelateria. Ice cream before bed every night yuum!

Did you the confirmed tea addict actually try the coffee?
Now all we need to know is whether DG indulged that other Roman speciality - offal. I had brains when I was there - the waiter was clearly wondering if I knew what I was ordering. I did.

I agree the gelato and the pastries with coffee are just fantastic.
Another typical dish is trippa alla romano, although it is not to my liking.
Another well known gelateria, favoured by the locals, is Mondi. I can't remember what was in it but one of their specialities is an ice cream called Monte Bianco / Mont Blanc. Delicious!
@Frank F - I'm usual mortified by my spelling and typographical mistakes but on this occasion I think It like more that the word I intended.
