isn't GBK owned by a large uk private equity group (http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/
reviews/6211.html) that owns a whole pile of other uk restaurant chains - nothing new zealand about it... except perhaps a little smart branding...

It's culinary vandalism. On behalf of New Zealand, I apologise.

Actually, after wading through all the verbiage on the gbkinfo website, the only NZ connection seems to be that Peter Gordon was "consulted" on the "design" of the food. Shame on him.

I ate at Goddards many times myself and mourn its loss along with you DG. While I enjoy GBK too... they are spreading like weeds or rather like Starbucks.

It is a damn shame that Goddards shut up shop - one less reason to visit Greenwhich now.

At least there is still one half-decent bookshop there; Marcet books, just off the market area.

And yet... the Square Pie company continue to flourish at lo-slung denim haunted Spitalfields. I suspect it's because good old Pie 'n' Mash is just too ordinary for edgy, hip young gunslingers - unless it's done Ironically, like the one that opened - and closed - in Notting Hill a few years back. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - if Pie and Mash (and its Northern cousin Pie and Peas) came from an obscure village in a forgotten bit of Vosges, Asturias or Lombardy it's be on every top restaurant's menu.

By the way - did anyone else notice that the pre-gentrification Pie and Mash stall at Borough Market is now banging out roast beef baguettes?

I only ate in Goddards once, but I have been in mourning for it. It was an amazing place - always busy to bursting point, with a good line in banter from the staff and the regulars.

GBK was started by some Kiwis, Annie; but they sold it out to an investment group around 2 years ago. That's why it's spreading like a bad weed. Though I suppose I shouldn't complain, since they do at least serve good food. There are a couple of other "gourmet" burger chains that don't serve meat that's anywhere near as nice. (FBC, I'm looking at you and your shite burgers!)

And it's hardly their fault the owners of Goddard's wanted to sell.

Terrific. Another one bites the dust. It's not as if we haven't got a few burger bars and need a few more...

The question is now where can you get a decent pie and mash in London? Is there still one (Manzi's??) on Tower Bridge Road - if anyone can help please let me know!

I like GBK, I also like pie and if the chap is doing an online pie service then it's winners all round.

Sabatino's Italian Bakery on Cape Cod had the same thing happen to them, except this time the owner pulled a fast one on the lease.

Sabatino thought he was paying on a lease to own plan and found out years later that he was just renting the building. The actual owner broke the lease and was planning to put in a Taco Bell instead.

A fucking Taco Bell.

The area planning board denied the building permit and saved the day, except by now Sabatino had seen his bakery closed for almost a year while waiting for everything to pan out.

He decided to retire instead of having to start over. He was even courted with free rent from numerous towns on the Cape.

It was the best pizza you could get outside of Napoli. It helped that he was Neapolitan.

i ate at goddards many times and jolly nice it was. but i'm afraid that the meal i had in the new place was much more delish. sorry.

for shame

I know you Brits find change unsettling (had to stir, sorry!).
But I like pies as much as the next Englishman.

I ate once at Manzis on Tower Bridge Road:
a) I've had better pies from a supermarket
b) I cook like shit (i'm not related to Peter as far as i know) but i can make bettr mash than them: all lumps and cold it was
c) likker: yuk. Shouldn't it be, like, heated?
d) smiles were not on offer that day, maybe because it was sunny outside (or maybe cos I was wearing a suit: wipes a lot of smiles, that, I've noticed)

But the decor and history could not be denied. Plus it were cheap, and I had fun trying the eel.

Paul - there is Cooke's Hackney Broadway, a couple of Kelly's in Bethnal Green In BG Road and Roman Road - yumm miss pie and mash, cant get it in Australia mores the pity!

Mazz - you can get it at Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Sydney and Yatala Pies between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. In Melbourne you would be so busy eating Gyros from Lamb's in Lygon St you wouldn't be bothered with pies...

I, as a local, will not be mourning the passing of Goddards. If you want nasty meat pies and watered-down parsley sauce, there are still plenty of other places to get them in London - two of them only a short bus ride away in Deptford High Street. GBK may be a chain, but Greenwich already has plenty of independent restaurants and unfortunately many of them sell mediocre food at tourist prices (as do some of the chains). On initial sampling, GBK is a welcome addition, although its limited range means it will be an occasional visit rather than a regular haunt.

Thankyou Uncle Hunty - I live in Brisbane and have had Yatala pies which, while they are delish, aint pie and mash as i know it! Will look out for the Sydney one next time i go
(don't get to Melbourne much unfortunately!)
