My daughter went on a free week long summer art course at Dulwich College a few years back. We emerged from the station on the first morning and couldn't believe that was a school! The art and music blocks were huge - at her Stratford E15 state school where she was doing A Levels in those subjects there were just a couple of rooms. Truly a different world.

While walking the Green London Way last year I passed through this area. At one point I got lost and had to ask the chap manning the toll booth where I was, very friendly and all for free. Nearby is the house where John Logie Baird lived when he was working at Crystal Palace.
|
How did I not know about this? In the future it's possible all roads will become covered by road pricing (to replace excise duty when electric cars become standard).
|
It is amazing that there are still things like this that have somehow escaped my attention all these years.

Every day is a learning day on this blog!
Thanks for this, I had no idea. Very quaint. |
Visit the College on a Friday and you can see the James Caird, Shackleton's lifeboat. A better experience than the exhibition the RGS recently put on. Tour commences at 11:30am, booking required.

And also free for motorcycles; there's room to squeeze between the post and the kerb.
I travelled through the tollgate for many years when I lived at Crystal Palace and commuted to work in central London, in the 80's and 90's. I think in the early 80's there was a doubling of the car toll from 10 pence to 20 pence! |

You might even spot girls carrying bulging bags of cricket kit...

Carry on past the council estate, and you reach the local state secondary school, Kingsdale. It makes quite a contrast with Dulwich College, with a standard post-war structure having been completely refurbished and covered by a shiny shell in the Blair years.
|
The council estate referenced also warrants further investigation, surrounding as it does the old Victorian pile Kingswood House, former home of Mr Bovril.
