Somewhat ironically, I'd seen that the temporary renaming had happened, with photos of the roundels, but missed completely that it was sponsored until I read your blog.

All the headlines, which is all I read, just credited TfL. So maybe the sponsorship was a canny move after all!
Lovedebt? Loved it, nicely done.
I wonder if the people handling the publicity for the credit card company are asking why their branding wasn't on the roundels outside?, most of the media coverage just showed these rather than bothering to record what was on the platforms.

Considering we went out in the semi-finals, the 'WAY OUT' sign is rather appropriate.
I know you are a bit of a curmudgeon on this kind of thing, but it seems a fairly harmless and short-lived bit of fun which raises some much-needed revenue. I also had no idea it was sponsored until I read your piece.
Trek out to zone 5? Perhaps they were going by way of Oakwood, because Southgate is zone 4...

I even turned off my auto-announcer and announced the station as Gareth Southgate. I even told my happy customers that I would wait in the platform for an additional 30 seconds if they wanted to take a few selfies!
I'm with David on this one. The foolish decision to freeze fares leads to this sort of thing.

It's fairly harmless, if a bit desperate, but as it raises cash I won't be losing sleep over it.

I really can't see people making a decision to use because they renamed a station.

Maybe I'm odd though as I just tune out advertising, and in this instance its fairly subtle. Worse is the really obvious kind of renamings as happened at Canada Water but, that's 100k TfL otherwise wouldn't have had so again, meh.
@ PiccDriver Love it!!

I too hadn't noticed it was a sponsored thing - so I fear DG has done LoveDebt the greater service!
If you'd been at the station you would have noticed. The sponsor's name was even written in chunky black marker pen as part of the message on the whiteboard in the ticket hall.

The BBC did a splendid job of cropping the name out.
The majority (by a factor of 3 to 4) of Visa cards in the UK are debit cards, not credit cards.

Visa is just a middleman and now that the EU has stepped in, it merely takes 0.2-0.3% of every transaction. People go into debt with their financial institution.
It's not that specific company, it's the concept of plastic money in general. If your wallet is empty it's empty. You see it immediately. On the other hand with a card...
But Visa isn't a Credit Card Company. Well done on falling down that rabbit hole.

It is a payment systems provider (much like MasterCard). As it happens the majority of cards issued with the Visa logo are in fact Debit Cards.
What bothers me is that the debt card company appears to not only have supported this little adventure but has also done major sponsorship of the tournament itself. Legitimising repressive regimes appears to be all the rage. Nobody seems particularly concerned either. Apparently sport neutralises human rights violations.
Can't help thinking that TfL shouldn't be monkeying around with station names; they should be sacrosanct. The names on the station infrastructure should always be an exact match with the maps, announcements, journey planners etc.

That's one reason why Aldersgate was renamed Barbican, to avoid confusion with Aldgate.

Seeing station names such as Webminster and Buxton Water must be very confusing for visitors, especially those from overseas. I certainly wouldn't realise that 'On a 2 Étoiles' on the Paris metro was really 'Charles de Gaulle - Étoile', especially as I have absolutely zero interest in football.
Station names are not sacred. Indeed, even sacred things are not sacred. An unsponsored renaming would be a bit of harmless fun. Even sponsored, it's still fun, and "almost harmless".
Almost harmless, but point taken. It probably feels better when you can choose your own sponsor, and get some money for it.
Remember that the trackside roundels and those at the ends of platforms were not altered. There was also no change to the automatic announcements and onboard displays.
Station names aren't 'scared', never have been. Mill Hill Park became Acton Town, can't get a more radical change than that, one name having no connection to the other. Not much 'town' at the station either, that's up the road a fair way. Nightingale Lane became Tooting Bec - it goes on...

Station names are to help people, notably strangers know where they are (or aren't). Outermost station renamings, just for fun and briefly, will upset fewest people, and maybe rake in a few bob. Might generate some extra fare revenue (peanuts) for those going to see and selfie it?
