A super set of pictures where symmetry wins.
Hoping very much you made it out to the incomparable Art Nouveau district!
Wow, you've certainly made me want to go there already, with just those two attractions - and there will (surely) be more in the next few days.

My only memory of Antwerp - long ago before I had come to better understand Belgian language issues - was of trying to buy entrance tickets to something by speaking French. It was politely made clear to me (in excellent English) that this was not a good way to make myself popular with the locals.
Hurrah! Glad to read it was a good trip DG.
I changed trains in Antwerpen on Sunday and was woefully unprepared for this marvellous station. Arriving by local train on the upper level, the approach to the station already created a sense of anticipation, as the viaduct is rather beautiful, too. I made a mental note to return for a proper visit, so thanks for creating a travel guide!
Antwerp one of the great cities of Northern Europe. I hope you have a fantastic day DG.
The Red Star Emigration museum is a great attraction, describing the processing of (hundreds of?) thousands who made their way through Antwerp to the New World from all over Europe in the late 19th/early 20th century. Irving Berlin was one such, at the age of four, as I remember.
I too went to Antwerp on the train a few years ago, only without realising you needed a special 'Any Belgian station' ticket. My mistake was pointed out gently but firmly by the ticket inspector between Brussels and Antwerp.
Wow indeed!
I look forward to the rest of the installments now, after this cracker of an opening.
My favourite European city. I know you're not much of a drinker DG, but I'd recommend Zee Zicht. Great bar in an interesting area of town.
I nearly booked to go to Antwerp today, but thankfully checked a list of Belgian public holidays before I pressed 'Confirm' and discovered that August 15th is the feast of the Assumption... so picked Tuesday instead.
Didn't know they'd done that to the station!

And, although plenty missed, Antwerp was hit badly by German vengeance weapons. Some four thousand were killed by them including nearly 600 in one V2 attack which directly hit a cinema.

An old boy in a pub I used to use was nearby in a three-tonner when the rocket landed and in one of those weird events was shoved about 100 yards down the road by an air blast and emerged totally unhurt from the wreckage of the lorry.
Never considered Antwerp as a destination. Purely for the wooden escalators it is now high on my list!
Burntweenie - Was hoping to include a visit to Antwerp on a recent cycling trip to NL after reading this article. Unfortunately we run out of time. That bar looks great, can't wait to visit.
No great fire risk I'd say with wooden escalators kept as clean as those seem to be, and presumably no discarded matches or fag ends.
