Great piece of writing DG
York is a fantastic place to visit, with a rich history which spans centuries, that is on public show. It manages this without being plastic disney.
Did you go to a chocolate museum? We went to York’s Chocolate Story and it was good enough, they presented a nice history of York’s chocolatiers along with some Cadbury bashing for good measure.
I would rather have thumbs for fingers, less risk of melting.
My elementary school was not very far from a Rowntree (now Nestle, of course) factory. But I'm afraid I always found the smell slightly acrid and unpleasant. I always used to marvel that something so nice could smell so horrible while they're making it. Though not quite as bad in that respect as a brewery!
Rowntree's garden village is New Earswick, not Eastwick.

Back when I was at University in York one could virtually tell the wind direction by whether the morning air smelled of rich dark chocolate or burnt biscuit - the latter apparently eminating from the now defunct British Sugar factory on the western outskirts.
For me York is one of those places where because it's so near and easy to get to, and I've often had to go for work, haven't planned proper exploring or been to the tourist places. I started putting that right in a lovely pre-Covid visit in March 2020. I'm astonished I've never seen Rowntree Wharf as I've often been just round the corner.

I was once interviewed for a job with one of the Rowntree trusts based in York so life could have been very different.
Another great article, but I couldn't help wondering when Terrys were going to get a mention! Maybe tomorrow.
Today York.
Tomorrow... Doncaster?
The wrapper you show in the picture is obviously not 'Original' otherwise it would not say so and the two fingers also had the name Rowntree imprinted along the top with, as far as I remember, no mention of KitKat.
I used to work on the KitKat and Polo lines at Rowntrees many moons ago. Many a night shift I returned home covered in mint icing sugar.
I never tire of visiting York. It has so many diverse and interesting aspects; confectionery of course, but also railways, religion, racing, riverside and splendid historic buildings. Also, an excellent museum and some great pubs!
The Rowntree Foundation has also done some amazing work in documenting the lives and conditions of working-class people.
