A very entertaining read, thanks for the memories. The Paris opening ceremony recalls the very effective use of the River Yarra for the launch spectacle for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne - probably the only CG opening I can recall.
I also love Tokyo Melody - One of my favourite all-time instrumentals.
I can’t believe that much of tonight’s opening ceremony is going to take place on a Parisian river. In-Seine….. I’ll get my coat!
Russia didn't buy the broadcast rights this year and are holding their own 'World Friendship' games in September - keep an eye on which countries attend.
It must have been 2004, but I remember watching one ceremony in the pub with a few friends from work and spotting the older and less athletic competitors in the parade, wondering whether I too could become an Olympian, by taking up a less athletic sport like shooting or archery!
Thankyou for reminding us of Tokyo Melody
why was Pascal digging about in your drawers
I think of all these, London 2012 is the only Opening Ceremony I've watched, and probably the most segments of sports too!

Of the rest, Munich (for the wrong reasons), Montreal (Nadia Cominechya?), Los Angeles, Atlanta, Sydney & Beijing are the only ones prior to 2012 that I've remember as being host cities!
This will be my 17th Olympics, although I was only two for my first one, so don't remember that, or much about Tokyo, but I probably remember most of the others, especially 1976 as I was in that gap between leaving school and starting work.
I enjoy watching for the opportunity to see sports that don't otherwise get a lot of airtime (volleyball, badminton, & table tennis, for example).
Also, thanks for the reminder of V, I'd forgotten how good that was.
Love your description of London 2012.
I didn't know that in '64 and '68 the "summer Olympics" were held in October!
Gave up watching tonight out of sheet boredom. The idea of a river pageant sounded great but turned out to be tedious.
I remember everyone being worried it would rain in London for the opening ceremony but then didn't; Paris wasn't so lucky. Still a good show though.
That was a dreadful opening
“ I was also secretly pleased nothing had topped the first 20 minutes of London's Industrial Revolution mega-tableau. Maybe never will.”

As someone paid to be in the 2012 Opening Ceremony (it involved fire so they felt we deserved a grand) in a segment that was cut shortly before the big day for time reasons, I had the rare chance to experience the build up in rehearsals and then go with my Dad on his spare ticket to see the actual Friday night event itself. Nothing, nothing can capture the utter brilliance of that opening. It can still bring a tear to my eye. One of the top moments in my adult life.

I’m guessing you at least saw a live rehearsal DG. I hope so.

And I’m sure there are Parisians who will say the same about 2024. Good for them
