'The Great Hall appears with a jolt, like walking from a Poirot whodunnit into some codpiece melodrama'

This is why I read this blog
I love Eltham Palace having discovered it on the Capital Ring. That year I returned twice more with equally astonished friends, though by the third visit I wished I hadn’t so assiduously avoided the EH membership salesman on my first!
For those of you watching The Crown it has been used at least twice as a setting. The gardens in the spring and summer are gorgeous as well and if you have an Art Fund you get in for free.
I've no idea why I've yet to visit this wonderful building; note: entry is free for 'Art Fund' members.
Readers with aforementioned excitable offspring will also be pleased to know that Eltham Palace has a large outdoor play area next to the coffee shop - great for burning off energy!
I last visited in the mid noughties, sounds like it’s time for another one!
It does look like they could comfortably film an entire Bond film there.
Southern do a 2 for 1 offer for Eltham Palace if you go by train, which makes it a bit of a bargain.

I have English Heritage membership, so why haven't I visited yet!
Thanks for the reminder.
In 1989 I completed an Army Resettlement course there, listening to lectures in the Great Hall. I believe the Palace was run by the Royal Army Educational Corps.
I would like to second the first comment from MO.

I was an 'extra' in the Crown. One of my scenes was filmed in that gorgeous, circular reception area. Norman Hartnell talks to the Queen about what frocks she wants to order. While waiting to film we all hung out in the Great Hall. Very classy.
They have some great special events through the year, from Jousts to Art Deco fairs, and they also host the annual Greenwich World Cultural Day.
The carp in the moat are huge and can sniff out someone who has bought a bag of fish pellets at the gift shop from 50 yards away
I think it might be worth noting that the palace is now closed on Saturdays. Tried going a couple of weeks ago and the friendly English Heritage guy on the door indicated that this was going to be a permanent change.
A link to a fascinating (or ludicrous, depending on your turn of mind) discussion of the many symbols in the marquetry and how they relate to Steven and Virginia Courtald.

I remember the last time you recorded a visit,
almost ten years ago.
In the mean time, Cheryl's been there also!
