But everyone looks so happy to be at Bromley-By-Bow [ BBB? ] behind that anti terror barrier in that realistic artists rendering.

"not especially big", yet can carry 13 persons? The lift at Walthamstow Central has a whiteboard next to it requesting no more than 4 people use it at a time, or it'll break down. The sign is almost universally ignored.

Good for TfL.
Agree with your comment about staff cutting revenue evasion, although at my local (Southeastern) station the staff member stays behind the screen and ignores the numerous ticketless ones. |
There's probably a really sensible answer to this that, not being a user of this station, I am not privvy to.
Why does one of the lifts say 'Lift to exit', but the other 'Lift to platform 2'? Actually, in my typing I've just realised my stupidity, and indeed, there is a sensible answer. One of the photos is on the concourse, the other on the platform... I will leave this here though, just in case anybody else wasn't thinking properly. |
They are only making all tube stations step free to prepare for the forthcoming invasion of the Daleks.

one of my local stations,South Woodford, is to become stepfree soon, but passengers (sorry, customers) have been warned of disruption with one entrance closed for 3 months. I'm glad I no longer have to commute every day, but I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end.

I see what you did there with 11 being a prime number...

I only just saw that later, because I was reading from the top down...

The people in the picture on the Hawkins Brown site look like they're gleefully stepping off into some kind of primordial ocean.

It's not an anti-terrorist barrier. For those unfamiliar with the area, Bromley-by-Bow's station entrance opens directly onto the A12 dual carriageway, so it's just a normal crash barrier.

Can anyone help complete this timeline of step-free access on the tube:
62 - Kings Cross St Pancras - 27 September 2010 63 - Green Park - September 2011 64 - Blackfriars - February 2012 65 - Wembley Central - May 2012 66 - Farringdon - July 2012 67 - Greenford - October 2015 68 - Tower Hill - August 2016 68 - ?? 70 - Vauxhall - September 2016 71 - Tottenham Court Road - Feburary 2017 72 - Bond Street - 17 November 2017 73 - Bromley-by-Bow - 8 March 2018 |
Frankie. I was about to post the very same question. I don’t think there is a 69th step free station. Either at some point TfL have decided to recount their list of step free stations and have decided a station which wasn’t historically listed as step free now merits its place on the list, or there is a mystery 69th station we haven’t been told about!

Here’s the list I have:
As at 2003/4 when step free started being shown on maps, there were 40: Barking, Bermondsey, Caledonian Road, Canada Water, Canary Wharf, Canning Town, Chalfont & Latimer, Chesham, Chorleywood, Dagenham Heathway, Elm Park, Epping, Fulham Broadway, Hammersmith (H&C), Hammersmith (P&D), Harrow & Wealdstone, Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3, Heathrow Terminals 4, Hillingdon, Hounslow West, Kensington (Olympia), Kew Gardens, London Bridge, North Greenwich, Richmond, Southwark, Stanmore, Stratford, Sudbury Town, Tottenham Hale, Upminster, Upney, Uxbridge, West Finchley, West Ham, Westminster, Willesden Junction, Wimbledon, Woodford, Woodside Park And since then: 41 - East Ham - August 2004 42 - Earl’s Court - October 2004 43 - Hounslow East - January 2005 44 - Kilburn - February 2005 45 - Brixton - July 2006 46 - Wembley Park - November 2006 47 - Morden - June 2007 48 - Heathrow Terminal 5 - March 2008 49 - Oakwood - May 2008 50 - Hendon Central - May 2008 51 - Finchley Central - June 2008 52 - Pinner - July 2008 53 - Acton Town - October 2008 54 - Wood Lane - October 2008 55 - Roding Valley - January 2009 56 - Golders Green - February 2009 57 - Edgware - August 2009 58 - High Barnet - October 2009 59 - Hainault - February 2010 60 - Southfields - July 2010 61 - Kingsbury - August 2010 62 - King’s Cross St Pancras - September 2010 63 - Green Park - September 2011 64 - Blackfriars - February 2012 65 - Wembley Central - May 2012 66 - Farringdon - July 2012 67 - Greenford - October 2015 68 - Tower Hill - August 2016 69 - ? 70 - Vauxhall - September 2016 71 - Tottenham Court Road - February 2017 72 - Bond Street - November 2017 73 - Bromley-by-Bow - March 2018 |
Have been surveying the tube map and I have a theory.
Paddington H&C station went step free in December 2013. I think TfL would consider that they have two separate stations at Paddington. That should have made Paddington H&C the 67th station. There are TfL press releases which refer to Greenford and Tower Hill as the 67th and 68th step free stations, but maybe they had a recount after that and realised their error. That would make the end of the list: 66 - Farringdon - July 2012 67 - Paddington H&C - December 2013 68 - Greenford - October 2015 69 - Tower Hill - August 2016 70 - Vauxhall - September 2016 71 - Tottenham Court Road - February 2017 72 - Bond Street - November 2017 73 - Bromley-by-Bow - March 2018 |
David - good theory! Makes sense to me.
Counting tube stations has always been a bit of an imprecise science! I’m not sure that Paddington should ‘count’ until all limes are step-free. Otherwise, does Kings Cross St Pancras count as 3 as there are 3 blobs on the tube map? dg writes: We've had that discussion. |
The press release finally appeared more than a week after the station became step-free. Nobody came to cut any ribbons.
