Ramsgate.

Newhaven surely. Oh the number of times I caught those ferries (showing my age now).

Seconded.

Oh, I mean Ramsgate, not Newhaven.

Thirded.

It was a big mistake just to read the top item then comment without having read the others. It obviously isn't Newhaven as it is difficult and expensive to get there by train from East Kent. But, surprisingly, it does have a casino.

Ramsgate

Newhaven..casino..*laughs*, the nearest is Brighton Marina. Ferries still run to Dieppe but not to L'Harve. The master of the Seven Sisters has decided not to turn it in the river tonight and I'm watching it reverse out of the river as I type.

Well at the very least a casino company. Fortunes Fun Casino Company

But you can't believe all you read on the web so I bow to local knowledge.

Two readers in Newhaven? What are the chances of that then? You in Fort Road then Gladys, or on the West Quay? Hello from Meeching Rise.

'than it'

Hurrhurrhurr.

I was in Ramsgate last weekend, suitably unimpressed by the long walk to the station. The chippie by the harbour (actually called 'The Harbour') does a decent cod - as I walked out onto the harbour front I was greeted with the most brilliant sunset I've seen in a long time.

It isn't all harbour and pleasantries though, by a long chalk.

Definitely my home town of Ramsgate, with Margate and Broadstairs as it's companions.

Happy memories - all my childhood holidays were spent in Ramsgate with my Grandparents. I got a huge burst of nostalgia just from reading your description.

My guess for the trio is the trio of Rochester, chatham and Strood.

I see no-one has picked up on the phrase "ferries once sallied forth". Dead giveaway, once you get the subtle hint. Y'see, the ferry co. that ran from Ramsgate to Dunkirk and Ostend (or Dunkerque and Oostende if you prefer) was called Sally Line. A quick Google confirms they ceased UK operations in 1998.
