Are you familiar with Marine Court, in Hastings, E Sussex, also modelled on the Queen Mary? THere are some photos here http://www.flickr.com/photos/37439534@N05/3713457921/in/set-72157621220131541/ onwards.

You can see why publicity seeking businesses would be keen to get a recommendation from DG: such eloquent descriptions and glowing praise.

Maybe you can get a free meal from the Labworth next time?

I remember going there years ago when I was a kid. It wasn't quite so fancy then, just your basic seaside cafe selling chips and ice creams. I also remember an edition of the Smash Hits magazine having an interview with the Pet Shop Boys and the accompanying photos were posed for in front of that building.

I just had a look at the post of the firsttime you went there. I'm embarassed to find out I made a very similar comment on there to the one I made above. Even the Pet Shop Boys story.

you rotten swine DG you are revealing a best kept secret. I stumbled on the Labworth 5 years ago after dropping my daughter off at Guide Camp. although it is the other side of London from me we regularly go there for their delicious Sunday Lunches. Now you've advertised it I'll never get a seat again!!!!!

How on earth do you get there via public transport?!

That is a great gem of a building, made even better because it's being used and not just a museum.

I have just been told by a native of C.I. who had his 40th there, that the guy who owns it was a chef at another restaurant and bought the labworth when he won the lottery. Sounds like a good use of lottery funds.

Dan - C2C train from Fenchurch Street to Benfleet, then the number 3 bus to Canvey Leigh Beck, or walk, Canvey's not big.

But if you're out that way, visit the pubs near Benfleet station - the Anchor is medieval, as is the Church with its plaque commemorating a famous Viking battle that took place nearby. Hadleigh Castle is also worth a visit (and not the neighbouring Sally Army fields being used for the Olympic Biking). Get back on the number 3 and get off at Hadleigh Church, or walk across the downs from Benfleet. English Heritage maintain it but there's free entry, walls that can (but probably shouldn't) be climbed to peer down the garderobe chutes, and excellent views across the mud flats.

Last time I went to Canvey (a couple of years ago) I walked the circuit of the island by the sea wall with Hampstead Ramblers. We stopped for lunch at the Lobster Smack, a pub by the sea wall in one of the remoter parts of the island (and near the jetty that Dr Feelgood were "down by").
Is the "Canvey Is England's Lourdes" graffiti still there?
