Hey, we share a birthday, though you have a 10 year head start on me :D
Wishing you a very happy birthday, DG.
Happy birthday, and I look forward to your story on the number 54 bus trip.
Lovely read... many happy returns on this extra special day!!!
I dare you to go into the Tesco (it’s chaos).

😉
Many Happy Returns, DG.
Happy Birthday DG!

Many happy returns!
54 eh. I suppose there are worse places than Elmers End. Thank you for telling all 62 year olds they have less than 20 years to go....

Oh, and happy birthday.
Happy birthday, you young whippersnapper. Your post is a clever idea for your birthday. I might do the same for mine, but I don't think I can back past my blog beginning in 2004, except for my 21st.

I expect you will get past the average life expectancy as you have a lot still to investigate and report on to us. I am a little surprised that for a male in good health and fit, who doesn't smoke or drink excessively only has an expectancy short of 82.
You can 'expect' as much as you like, Andrew, but my second sentence is factually correct.
Happy birthday

Thanks to a leap year in 2020 I will miss the Saturday for my birthday
Sending best wishes to you,DG,on your fifty fourth! Enjoy your Saturday Birthday! 🎉🎂
Happy birthday DG!
54! A mere youngster! My next birthday will be my 70th. And it is not far off. Oh, well, best wishes on your birthday anyway.
Happy Birthday!

My daughter shares the day with you. I am looking forward to her celebration lunch tomorrow.
Happy Birthday DG 🎂
Happy birthday!

On a rather pedantic (and possibly ignorant) note, aren't you as likely to see a birthday on a Saturday as on any other day of the week?
Birthdays are spread equally across all days of the week, but those born on Sundays are likely to see fewest Saturday birthdays (and those born on a Sunday in the year before a leap year fewest of all).
Happy Birthday, DG!
So that's why there is no longer a route 82.

Male life expectancy is also dragged down by artificial means, men dying young (most of the stabbings have been teenagers and those in their early 20's), then there is suicide, doing stupid stuff in cars, alcohol, drugs and smoking, not going to the doctor (perhaps I'll stop coughing up blood), working in unhealthy industries like mining and the long hours culture.

I'd be more interested in how many years of healthy life I have left, as opposed to waiting for the carer to turn up, or in a home, connected to an oxygen tank.
Happy Birthday DG.
Happy birthday and thanks for an interesting post.

The statistics are indeed factual, but they cannot tell anyone how long that individual will live. It is rather pleasant though, that the longer one lives, the greater one's expected age at death becomes. So those who reach 93 (for instance) have a pretty reasonable chance of making the century.
Happy birthday, DG. And many happy returns.
Happy Birthday DG!

Still Anon has a very good point regarding the life expectancy. The unerring ability of men to self destruct by a variety of means is included in the actuarial figures, so if you steer clear of the Crack, Spice, Woodbines, Special Brew, and fast cars, AND use the new zebra crossings across the cycleways you can look forward to at least one further Saturday birthday.
I'd advise against thinking you can calculate my life expectancy better than I can.
HBDTY, HBDTY, HBDDDG, HBDTY!
How amazing to know what you did over all the years. Wish I'd kept diaries now but reading yours reminds me of bits, since I am only 3 years ahead of you. I think I may have done Garfunkels for my 21st (which sounds a bit sad now)!

I dont think I want to get to 82; I might have had enough by then, though I have such a big 'to do' list having read your blog for 6 years or so I might have to stick around to finish it. Thanks and have a great day which I look forward to reading about tomorrow
Cross stitching! I never would have guessed. Bet you don’t have time for that any more. Bet you still have them though.
Sings along with @strawbridge (sorry I'm out of tune!)
Have a great birthday, DG. Thanks for making every day of the year a little better by virtue of enjoyment of your blog. Those actuarial tables ought to give a bit more credit for the fact that you stay away from the oft-quoted 'most dangerous place is the home' seeking out facts and photos to enrich us.
Many Happy Returns DG!
Happy Birthday and have fun at the major transport hub of Elmers End Interchange! It's also sobering to consider those transport improvements currently under discussion that one might not live to see actually open.
Happy Birthday; hope you have a great day.

I'd be grateful if your Dad could confirm whether or not you had cheese and sausages on sticks as a 3 year old.
Great read DG,
Must pass it on to my now middle aged children who are a potent reminder of advanced years.
A very Happy Birthday dg.

Hope you enjoy your day, and many more birthdays to come.

Acturial statisitcs or not!
I'm left wondering how actuaries risk calculations factor for males that do cross stitch between ages 26 and 37..?

HB by the way. Hope you get to enjoy a gassy green bottle at some point of the weekend.
My Mum did all the tapestrywork, not me.
Have a good one, DG. As always, since we share a birth year, your post on such occasion leaves me in a nostalgia deficit and I will be looking for an episode of Mungo, Mary and Midge on youtube...
Happy birthday DG.
But you don't say whether you've still got your mum's cross stitch proudly adorning your walls. I very much hope you do.
Many happy returns DG!

Here's for many more (healthy) years!
...and a Happy Birthday from me. I have a hazy memory at about age 9 of being upset because all my party guests wanted to watch Dr Who rather than play the party games I had envisaged.
Congratulations and many happy returns. Could we have a cross-stitch post some time please? How about a pop up exhibition in your flat - put me down for a ticket.
Many Happy returns of the (Satur)day DG.

I'm hoping I get to 104, as it'll be almost to the day, the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings! I'm already planning the party!
Happy Birthday DG - Thanks for your terrific blog - down a few Becks eh!
Wishing you a very happy birthday.
Happy birthday DG.
If it was a secret admirer, how did you know you were unreciprocating, or did this become clear later? I comment from a nosy perspective rather than a pedantic one.
Have a lovely birthday, DG!
Liked the 'Saturday birthday' angle!
Oh, and I am going to have my sixth Saturday birthday this year.
Happy Birthday DG! You're much younger than I thought you were - my brother's generation, not mine.
Of all people I would have thought you'd be one to reach your century, with all that exercise.

If the 54 was still running its old route to Croydon you'd be able to travel past the bottom of my road.
I've always thought I'd had more birthdays on Thursdays, but I've just checked and so far Friday is winning.

Monday:6
Tuesday:5
Wednesday:6
Thursday:6
Friday:7
Saturday:6
Sunday:6

Happy Birthday DG.
Happy Birthday DG
Happy Birthday, DG.

Here's to many more Saturday birthdays.
Blue Witch need not worry. We had a round table meeting and safety audit before the party and decided that DG's mum was now old enough to be trusted with little pointed wooden sticks. We also made sure that DG's grandparents were closely supervised at all times.
How apt that the 54th comment is by DG's dad!

Many happy returns DG, hope your Saturday is a good one.

My birthday is also on Saturday this year, so it seems we're both Tuesday's children. 2013 was a great birthday of mine, need to start thinking about plans for this year.
...not another birthday! you had one only last year!!
Happy Birthday DG, wishing you a marvellous one.
Cxx
As many other people have already said, Happy Birthday DG.

Speaking of the 28-year cycle of saturday birthdays, I'm currently towards the end of my first 11-year gap. My last Saturday birthday was in 2011 and my next will be in 2022. Incidentally, since 2022 will be my 29th birthday, that is when the cycle will begin anew.
DGD - oh come on, this was 1968.

"Blue Witch need not worry. We had a round table meeting and safety audit before the party and decided that DG's mum was now old enough to be trusted with little pointed wooden sticks. We also made sure that DG's grandparents were closely supervised at all times. "

Either you worked for a precursor of the HSE and are responsible for what now plagues us all, or you were indulging in the, erm, 'pursuits of the time', if this is your recollection...

Did you, or did you not, give a just-3 year old DG cocktail sticks to play with (and if so, why)? ;)
Blue Witch. I can admit we did not give a three year old those sharp pointed sticks to play with. Bits of cheese and pineapple would not have been part of his diet at that age. As this was DG's mum's birthday too, this sophisticated buffet food may not have been available until little DG was fast asleep in bed.
*loving the image of Little DG fast asleep in bed while Mummy and Daddy DG ate cheese and pineapple and sausages on sticks in another room*
Happy birthday fella.
Happy birthday DG. Mmmm, profiteroles!
Many happy returns of the day!
Happy Birthday DG. Hope you are enjoying your tbc celebrations.
Happy birthday DG, hope your having a great day!

I’m surprised just how far back you can remember or did you keep a diary from a early age?
Happy birthday. However long you last you will have brought a smile to my face for the duration. The things you think to write about never fail to amaze me.
It's a bit late in the day now, but Happy Birthday anyway, DG. I hope it was/is a good one.
Many thanks for this wonderful blog.
Nedd
Likewise - I love this blog, it's a daily 'lucky dip' that nourishes the mind and gets one thinking.

It also leads to further byways - for instance I was very curious about Timelash and found this gem

My last Saturday birthday was in 2016. A bit of research shows I was recovering from heavy flu, and had a trip to the dentist. I now feel keen to ensure that 2022 will be more interesting!
Happy Birthday DG.
Happy birthday dg. I hope you’ve had a great day. Lovely reading your exploits and predictions.
Happy birthday!

Was the prize alphabetical crossword you did in 1985 by Araucaria? I always enjoyed those.
Belated happy birthday.
Belated happy returns DG.

Your comment about calculating your life expectancy is intriguing - I work in pensions, and very few people really have any idea about their life expectancy or how to use the existing data to estimate it. Most guess and dramatically underestimate. But some people do have the tools and that leads me to ask: Are you an actuary?
Reading the full(er) set of comments a couple of days later causes an unpleasant chill to ripple through the leaves as I recall an extremely unsettling post from a few months ago. Carpe diem.

dg writes: It's all fine, don't worry.
Interesting post. I was born on a Saturday and my birthday this year will be my 12th one on a Saturday. I’m afraid I don’t remember any of them, even 2018.
Also interesting that the year separations are repeats of 6-5-6-11, at least for birthdates after March 1.
