I was just up at Hadleigh caste yesterday. Having seen it many times from the train I finally decided to investigate it.

Great photos, DG.

DG: hidden away in the local borough web site are all of the planning documents. Haven't dug through yet but bound to include details of the course. also details of how and why the scheme will NOT ruin the countryside!

Er, no, Greg, that's just you spouting vitriol at the mere mention of the word 'Olympic'.

None of Hadleigh Country Park is being used for the mountain biking course, it's all going in some fields nextdoor.

And there isn't going to be a new concrete car park, they're just reusing the existing one.

I'm not quite sure who the arrogant morons are here...

I only know Hadleigh as part of Billy Bragg's rewriting of 'Route 66' - 'A13, trunk road to the sea'. In rhyme and with no intake of breath, he spouts a line held in my brain forever - 'starts down in Wapping, there ain't no stopping, right past Barking and straight through Dagenham, down to Grays, Thurrock, rather near Basildon, Pitsea, Thunderslea, Hadleigh, Lea-on-sea, Hawkwell, Prittlewell, Southend's the end if you ever go to Shoeburyness'.

I wonder what they will do about people going to the other Hadleigh (in Suffolk) by mistake. The locals there are already used to being asked "Where's the castle?", but requests for the bike track are likely to be confusing.

I shall try and visit the Salvation Army tea room at Hadleigh thanks for your information on it.
Unlike the cafe you mentioned at Bray a few days ago, the Salvation army tea rooms have a menu that looks appealing to me."Meal of the day" for lunch, Tea and scones, breakfasts. Good plain food.
I am sure their prices will be reasonable -unlike Bray- and the venue looks to be in a nice location.

Very close to where I spent my early years.

The castle was also painted by Constable.
