Well you will have to post your address for us to be able to keep an eye on your flat.

oh bugger that. I was so looking forward to the event and now it's all pointless (maybe not all, but at least the visual part like you said). Oh well, there's bound to be some other event to get all excited about. Enjoy the trip!

It's probably a good compromise on safety though...helping to reduce claims from people injured through insufficient lighting.

Lights out London? LOL!

an HOUR long ? we did something like that over here, but only for 5 minutes. the european commission were banging on about it as it was some campaign of theirs', and guess what ? as brussels spent 5 minutes in darkness, the berlaymont building (home to all the commissioners) sparkled in all it's shining glory: not a single light was out. and not a single commissioner was to be seen.

Sydney (Australia, not Bristow) did this a couple months ago, didn't they? And it was actually in the dark.

I suspect that the shortest day was deliberately chosen by some PR numpty who thought he was being clever. Which it may actually be, since it will allow a lot of people to get a warm, ecological glow without making any change in their lives whatsoever.

I wonder if this is from the same PR gang as last month's Loot/Capital Radio Car boot sale, the organisers apparently failed to consider the effects of rain. It flooded with rain, the event was cancelled and the pre-booked pitches were (presumably) refunded.

Surely it would only be noteworthy if anything intelligent came out of Crapital? Just listening to their output should confirm that.

At Canary Wharf, all the offices leave their lights on overnight as standard. Their lights will be on, even if it is glorious sunshine. So surely, if they turn off their lights, that will save a fair bit of energy? Or am I missing something?

gwplf has it. At least it will be mostly dark by 10pm. The first old granny to fall down the stairs and break her neck in the dark because it was pitch black at 10:50 would make bigger headlines than the Lights Out campaign.

Ha ha - hilarious bit of incompetence. Maybe everyone should wander around with a torch and pretend to bump into things?

Of course, it would have more meaning if there was such thing as global warming! Haw, haw: CO2 as a pollutent! I think a bigger worry is the pollution flowing through the centre of London. The Thames is just saturated with dihydrogen monoxide. It can cause death in humans. By drowning. It's good for washing the car, though.

Don't worry. It *will* be dark at 9 - with 97\\% predicted cloud cover, having been raining most of the day.

This is an excellent opportunity for a protest. I will turn on every appliance in the house.

describing it as ... "the world's biggest climate change event ever".

No hyperbole then! Have you seen Taking Liberties? It's the Hollywood blockbuster of the summer!!!

There are just more stupid people-don't think they are just limited to working in PR companies.

I don't know about grids in Europe, but in Virginia when all the power is turned back on it sends a huge power surge and blows out many circuits leaving grids without electricity for longer than you can image!

Does that mean you're planning on leaving your lights ON while you're away? Tsk, DG.

Flashgordonnz has highlighted the serious problem of Dihydrogen monoxide. It is used as both an industrial solvent and as an additive in some baby foods. It is the silent killer.

Thankyou Flashgordonnz, you are great...for a kiwi.

It's a PR stunt!

Lighten up!

(sorry)

I don't know about you, but I hate a vacuous PR stunt pretending to be serious. And this one needn't have been vacuous. Seriously.

Save energy - turn off Crapital 24/7

I'm straying into Pedantic's territory here, but shouldn't the Queen be HM, not HRH?

dg writes: damn, there goes my knighthood.

light, isn't it?

dark, isn't it?

LOL to both your last two comments and the entire idea.

Bloody idiots.

I'm pretty sure that all the people who were behind this were quite aware that on the 'longest day' (not the latest night, btw) it would not be dark. For instance their publicity material when it was going to be 8-9 talked about 'it won't even be dark'.

DG, on another site, accused me of being a PR hack for saying this, I actually work in economic research. But does DG work for a rival radio station or PR firm? Let's all throw silly allegations around.

Maybe the organisers deliberately wimped out from holding the event at night so that the National Grid didn't collapse under the weight of all the switch-offing participants.

But the event's website repeatedly mentions that it will be dark...

"Just because it's dark doesn't mean you can't celebrate the night in style."

"Why not take advantage of the hour of darkness and do something appropriate?"

"Look upwards - the more lights go out the better view we'll all get of the stars. Read up on constellations and see how many you can spot."

So somebody at Lights Out London remains mighty deluded.

(oh and Matt, I didn't accuse you of being a PR hack, I merely wondered whether certain commenters might be. But let's all throw silly allegations around)

I wonder if the national grid will go into overload at 10pm with the power surge from all those lights, kettles and tv's being switched back on, on just when Big Brother starts.

Uncle Hunty: I must admit I'm involved in research to establish the applicability of DHMO in the control of Africanised Bees.

there is a link on the site asking for suitable playlists for the hour.

good chance for a few submissions. I have just suggested 'I can see clearly now', there must be so many more ' sunshine on a rainy day.....'

go on drop them a line and make a suggestion or two

Apparently there are some people who insist on having their lights on during the day. I've heard of these people, who no doubt have candelbras and 40 bulbs in each room. So a house full of those which are on in the daylight could well make a difference.

DG - " I merely wondered whether certain commenters might be."

There were only two of us, so there's a pretty high chance you were referring to me.

Anyway, it's 9:10pm now, on the day before the 21st (so basically the same) as I've just turned the lights on (in a ground floor room with large windows). The two houses I can see opposite, in a wide street, have their lights on too.
