Nice report DG.
Another nice way into Epping Forest is via Chingford and the Elizabethan Hunting Lodge. It's nice to have a bit of forest on our doorstep, even if you never really escape the Motorway noise!

Apparently there is even a camp site in there!

Donkey Derby at Theydon Bois on Sunday 12th July. Be there or be square.

How, in fact, is Theydon Bois pronounced? (I ask because I remember an old story by Frank Muir in which it features.)

It is "Theydon Boys" not as it would appear the French "bois" as in wood.

And while we're at it, is Plaistow "plahstow" (like I say) or "playstow"?

Looks like you had better bank holiday weather than we did!

Ah, right. In that case the story makes sense. The story was that he said to a policeman 'Excuse me, officer, I'm looking for Theydon Bois', to which the policeman replied (remember that this was a long time ago) 'Well, you won't find any round here, ducky'.

It's on my doorstep, but I've never properly explored Epping Forest. Shame.

One place it would be fascinating to read about on your blog is the ruin of Copped Hall. I've never visited, but I've always thought the place looked interesting from the M25.

On another note, when the Sainsbury's distribution centre was built in Waltham Abbey, people complained because the building interfered with their television reception. Since then, of course, the enormous News International print works have been built just off junction 25 of the M25, inbetween Cheshunt and Waltham Cross, having been transferred from Wapping. I wonder what sort of interference that causes?

Plaistow is pronounced 'plahstow'

Plaistow is pronounced plastow (long or short 'a' it doesn't matter. Similar to plaisterer who was a plasterer in days of yore.

Thanks Rich & Richard.

It looks lovely, and close to my house too. Thanks for the inspiration to visit.

DG - Glad you made it up to our playground, great report, obviously we too spent part of the BH weekend in the Forest though it is surprising how many locals don't visit.

On second thoughts that is a GOOD thing and curse you for letting the cat out of the bag that we arent all furry dice and Ford Escorts, stillettoes and soveriegn rings!

:o)

I'm glad to hear that you've finally discovered the forest.

It's a much shorter walk to the forest from Theydon Bois Station, next shortest is Loughton and Epping comes last. You get the booby prize for choosing that one.

My wife used to work for the Corporation of London although we are now both retired. She was a biological surveyor and used to wander round the forest all day recording 'things'. Yes I know - it was a hard life but someone had to do it.
