Usually I agree with your 'social policy' comments but not today. The police were entirely right to take action in Clapham. Just as the Scottish police failed to do a week ago when huge numbers of Rangers supporters gathered. As Whitty has said, the pandemic is far from over, and large gatherings are illegal still. I am sure Sarah Everard's family and friends would not wish a single person to contract Covid-19 as a result of a well intended but irresponsible demonstration of support.
It is possible to agree withe the notion that the police had to take some action in response to the largely peaceful vigil in Clapham, while simultaneously deploring the upsetting details of the way it was done.
Might have been sensible to have sent only female police to monitor the potential vigil.
The chances of catching COVID 19 in such an outdoor setting are vanishingly small. Yet so many people behave so prissily in pretending that outdoor infection is a real risk - naming no names - that the police regrettably had no choice but to enforce the break up of the vigil. The ‘correctness’ of the cause Is irrelevant in the face of the (non) risk it poses. As you sow, so you reap.
A policeman is charged with murdering a woman. The police fail to peacefully manage a vigil. Doesn't say much for our police force.
