A fascinating series of posts

I'd put good money on it that it was a committee of residents who chose the name "Rgeneration Road".

Have you done a series of posts on street names? If not, why not?

Ooooh you went right past my house!

Ganching, "Gay Gardens" (formerly "Stockdale Gardens") in Dagenham is a good one on that front.

The name was selected (by the residents of the street) in the 1950s, who (not foreseeing any forthcoming changes in meaning of the word) thought that it more accurately reflected the, erm, jolly, spirit of the road, and that it would help to ensure that the Post Office didn't continue to get their post mixed up with that of the residents of Stockdale Road, in another bit of Dagenham entirely.

I was surprised, in West Hampstead recently for the first time in ages to see a rather dingy and unpleasant alleyway (which lots of people refer to unaffectionately as "Rape Alley" has now an official name, Billy Fury Way I think it is.

So, yes, an interesting topic...

Have just navigated Bolina rd with Google street view. Imagine that at dusk and raining!
Very useful film location I would imagine

Any plans on moving on to London's lost canals? You can follow the path of the Grand Surrey very close to the Peck as it goes from Bermondsey to Camberwell. If you're lucky, you might even spot a mooring post.

"as if some ne'erdowell might leap out at any moment and your body might not be found for months"

Might not be recovered for months, but probably seen by thousands of commuters every morning on the way into London Bridge...

Yikes! The lengths, and places, you go to, to bring us the full report!

It's much appreciated. Another lost river done justice.

No plans to do 'lost canals' in the near future, no. But maybe in the far future.

Funnily enough I walked along Bolina Road last week on my own after 10pm, and I don't mind admitting it was pretty scary!

Interesting posts on the Earl's Sluice and the Peck ,DG.
Here in South London our underground rivers - apart perhaps from the Wandle - are not just hidden but forgotten too i.e place names.
