Ah Downham... One of my great regrets is not visiting the original Downham Tavern, reputely with the longest bar in Britain. These 1930s superpubs, designed in part to appease the temperance-minded LCC, have had a high attrition rate in the last few decades (the Robin Hood, Becontree Estate; Spurs Tavern, White Hart Lane Estate; St.Helier Tavern, St,Helier Estate; all demolished). Mind you, most had a pretty fearsome reputation by the end!
