I remember the ads 20 years ago on the tube: “Thamesmead - where London comes to life”. My then girlfriend and I went and a look.... ummm..... ;-)
Just checked, and I’m actually sitting here reading this slap bang on the 51.5th parallel in Lambeth. Will you be walking through my kitchen?!
I knew about the Clockwork Orange connection but didn't realise it was actually Binsey Walk where my aunt and uncle lived!
"the relaxation of flood-risk regulations" ... I'm certainly no expert, but is that wise? Will it all end up under water sometime.
Seems a pity to demolish them, as those flats would probably be listed if they were in Zone 1 (not that there's a spare lake to use). But much as there's nothing wrong with the design, I suspect 40 years of neglect makes it easier to bulldoze them than repair them.
I agree with Caz about the relaxation of flood risk regulations. Surely of great concert. I suppose at some point the walk will go through areas a little more cheery.
All very interesting and glad you are doing it so we don’t have to!
Thamesmead's flood regulations were relaxed decades ago. Only the original eastern estates required living space to be at first floor level and above. The remainder of Thamesmead has been built with ground floor homes, and the flood risk is officially low.
RE: Royal Arsenal. I'm tempted to give it a look, since it'll be perfect to get to all three locations my employer will be based at by the turn of the year, and since I might well have someone to move in with by the time Crossrail is there. Even if the imminent arrival of new Woolwich ferries might hold back the Gallions Reach crossing. Mind you, the development almost looks too good for the price. I don't want to go on and say the prices are too good to be true...but hopefully there isn't something afoot in Woolwich I'm not seeing.
"As for Asda's CFC..."

Don't you mean CDC? CFCs are the stuff that breaks down the ozone layer.

dg writes: CFC stands for 'Customer Fulfilment Centre' (see earlier sentence). Tesco and Ocado both operate CFCs. However, yes, Asda call them CDCs, so I've changed it.
Excellent two days so far. I take it you have read Nicholas Crane's 2 degrees west where he walks down the 2 degree west line without deviating more than 800 yards from each side? He gets to walk through Longbridge Car plant , an RAF base and crosses Poole Harbour with the help of the Royal Marines. He does mention some of the people he meets as well...
I'm enjoying this series. It seems I've made a few hits on 51.5N as well, from walking the London Loop, Thames Path and Green Chain Walk.
Sad that they are going to tear down those really cool brutalism houses!
P.S. the brutalism architecture makes this post far more interesting than all those about really old houses in a more or less rural area :)
