As it's a mile plus walk and the surface is being relaid as two tracks, why not run an electric mini-bus shuttle service for the duration of the games, using the cycling track.
That Giant Hogweed is a tough surviver, as there have been laws since the 1980's to try to eradicate the plant in this country.

I rather liked the Greenway signs, I bet I don't like their replacements as much.

A mile is not a long distance for an average person to walk.

An extra mile’s not far, so long as you’re expecting it, and I fear many people arriving at West Ham won’t be.

And a mile on an elevated weatherbeaten footpath is certainly no fun if you’re old, or infirm, or have toddlers in tow, or are knackered and trying to get home at the end of a long day’s spectating.

@ John - I think "eradicate" is a little strong, and somewhat misleading. The law is there to attempt curtailment, to prevent its further spread and the knowing cultivation of it in the wild. If there were a law to "eradicate" the plant, it would say something like "anybody passing a clump of Giant Hogweed and not hacking it down, digging it up or revving up a flamethrower will be put in the Tower".

Are there plans for a bridge to take the Greenway over Stratford High Street? Does anybody know? I was told by someone from the London Wildlife Trust a few months back that they might erect a temporary one just for the duration of the Olympics - which would be a shame. A permanent one is surely (sorely?) needed.

Mick - there are certainly plans to install a permanent pedestrian crossing where the Greenway crosses Stratford High Street, so that walkers/cyclists don't have to make a detour to the nearest traffic lights. As for a temporary bridge, not sure. Maybe.

I congratulate Getty Images for suggesting that the Manor Road bit of the greenway is an area called 'Abbey Green' - sounds like a bit of rebranding to me.

It will be interesting to see how they connect West Ham station to the Greenway - not heard much about that in a while. Having lived near enough the junction with West Ham, it's good to see the Greenway get a facelift - but I worry they will eradicate it's certain charm at the same time. I'm sure they're working on getting rid of the nasty niff too.

At West Ham they're building a temporary walkway from the far eastern end of the District line platforms, which'll then run parallel to the northern edge of the station, across the Jubilee line and up to the Greenway near Canning Road. Not exactly a direct route.

I occasionally see the Olympic site from the train into work. It's amazing how much it's changed in the past couple of years, isn't it?

If I were heading to the Olympics, I agree that you should use Stratford. Like West Ham, Stratford has its fair share of tube links and is a stop on the DLR. Stratford, however, seems to be only a short walk from the Olympic Stadium, while West Ham is somewhat further away. If they're directing people to West Ham in 2012, they may be in for a fair old walk.

i loved the Greenway when i lived round there... haven't visited for a while, i expect the desolate scruffy loveliness will be all gone.
