Hello darkness, my old friend…
Well, that’s cheered me up.
And it started so well!

I enjoy a bit of thought provoking but in the end I am always reminded of the words of the great German philosopher Stephan Remmler. Everything has an End, only the sausage has two. So at my age if I see Skylarks and carpets of bluebells, which were on offer in Mogador at the weekend, I just enjoy it in the knowledge that Mother Earth is busy working on a feeback loop which will cool everything by 5 degrees after we caused it to warm 3 degrees, and that once the viral infection know as humanity is dealt with, much like Covid, everything will return to normal.

Prescient but depressing. In all respects
With everything going on, we needed a lift…

First they sent the armada, then the sent the bluebells (and the flu).
Glad I got my viewing of Ashdown Forest bluebells in last week.
By sheer coincidence I have just been to the Royal Free Hospital, having spotted the beautiful bluebells on my way from Belsize Park station. Only to come home and see your blog on them!
You are magnificent and your blog is a national treasure, that is all.

Not sure what I found most disturbing in this piece.....maybe the thought of Eric Pickles on steroids.

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough, And stands about the woodland ride Wearing white for Eastertide. Now, of my threescore years and ten, Twenty will not come again, And take from seventy springs a score, It only leaves me fifty more. And since to look at things in bloom Fifty springs are little room, About the woodlands I will go To see the cherry hung with snow. |

Enjoy today, like it is your last.

Iran has no nuclear bombs at all, let alone ones with a yield of 5 MT that could be delivered to London.
For that yield, it would be a thermonuclear device, an H-bomb. As far as I am aware, the only people who might are China (just an handful) and perhaps Russia. The US arsenal tops out at around 1.2 MT, which would be bad enough, but most currently deployed warheads are around 100 kt, some up to 300 kt. (For comparison, Hiroshima was about 15 kt and Nagasaki was about 20 kt.) dg writes: I picked a Chinese missile |

Gulf stream and AMOC are related but not the same thing. See here.
dg writes: tweaked thanks |

Well, that spiralled quickly.
In the words of the ever-pessimistic Private Frazer, "We're doomed!" |
You will be pleased to hear the next expansion plans for the hospital will be in the car park at the back. Bluebells always make my morning when i go in

Pff. Why worry when the Universe is decaying so much faster than previously thought and the last remnants of stars will perish in blink-of-an-eye 10^78 years rather than the previous reassuringly eternal 10^1100 years. (I’m told these numbers are somehow different.. Google's Pointless Gigantic List of Numbers gives me numerical vertigo, but Part 2 notes that 10^78n is 'fairly close to the number of atoms in the observable universe')

Thank you, I enjoyed the timescales as much as the bluebells. My geological background prepared me for the former. Sadly, world ‘leaders’ use Stone Age minds to apply short-term leadership. I shall contemplate the bluebells to compensate.
On that happy note...(and Spanish flu did not come from Spain, it came from the USA).
On the bright side, there's going to be some really good meme potential when the AMOC collapses and permanently alters our climate for the worse.
I expect our estimate of the life of the universe to change when we figure out what we label as dark matter and dark energy really are. With three score years and ten looming later this year, I hope to be around for the answer but not the result.
