With more and more tarmac road surfaces, front gardens of houses (and some rear gardens too) being paved over, a lot of rainwater no longer soaks into the ground to feed rivers but runs into the road and via a drain to sewer. Also house roof water from gutters, which at one time went into a garden soak away, is nowadays sent to the main sewers. The sewage works then cannot cope when there is a heavy rainfall and often untreated sewage goes into the River Thames. The sewage works do send their cleaned up water back into the river but they do so a long way down stream. Lets hope these little river sources and tributaries do not dry up and vanish. I am enjoying reading this trip along the River Lea. |
