Wot about Shadwell?

Southern Railways appear to show no interest whatsoever in the Eastern interloper recently returned to their platforms.

The platforms are nothing to do with Southern. New Cross Gate station has been managed by London Overground since last September.

"as they spent most of their time looking at the carriage walls or out of the window, rather than at a newspaper." - At least they didn't look at each other. Standards must be kept up :-)

There's a "full" map in one of the photos you linked to...

Looks like the same trains they now have on the North London Line and also Clapham Junction to Willeseden.
Uncomfortable seats, and no forward/back facing seats, the old trains were more comfortable to sit in. I think it was Ken Livingstone who decided to have only side facing seats in order to provide more standing room. Based on surveys that apparently showed most passengers only stayed on the train for a few stops, so comfortable seating was not really needed!
Still with air conditioning you no doubt found the trains cabin temperature suitable.

The new trains really prove their worth on the North London Line at rush hour - with the old 313s, it was often impossible to get on, and quite a challenge to get off. And then someone would try to bring on a bike (surprisingly, not actually prohibited), or a pram, or a model cemetery, and it would just get even more snarled up.

With the new 378s, there's actually room for all the people who want to use the line.

Yes, the seats could be more comfortable, and yes, it would be nice to be able to face out of the windows to enjoy the view - but chances are, you're not going to be on them for very long.

Blimey! What an 18-carat bunch of whingers you all are. I happen to love the fact that we have bright, smart, air conditioned trains. In a month's time I'm looking forward to taking my kids quickly and easily from East London to Crystal Palace and the Horniman Museum at the weekend. OK, so the final layout is not perfect, but let's celebrate the improvements.

@Jonathan - love the Horniman Museum and totally agree with that sentiment. Think I'll definitely be taking more trips south now!

DG,

Go take another look at Whitechapel.... "The ELL's platforms aren't especially revamped "???? You didn't notice the almost step free gap between platform and train then? I don't recall there being a descent from platform to H&C/District subway before.

And I agree with P.o.P, NXG and all stations south to West Croydon & Crystal Palace are now LOROL stations but NXG could really do with some kind of indicator that ELL is running, the CIS screen in the ticket hall doesn't mention any of the services and the old Connex indicator on platform 2 only shows that platform's services and the old LUL CIS screen on platform 1 shows nothing at all.

Simon

Another vote of approval for the 378s. I occasionally have to use the West London Line during peak times and they've made the difference between a stacked train (there ends up being enough space to breathe, surprisingly) and one that leaves people behind on the platforms.
