Is that taxi taxi? Or minicab? Or Uber?
How about another table, number of "normal Londoners" annoyed when you take this mode of transport with 2 suitcases? :)
HEx can be a lot cheaper, if you book ahead.
In ye olden days the primary public transport route was a mainline train to Feltham and a dedicated bus service out to the airport, probably costing less than £2 all in.
Black cabs are of course unique in that the cost per minute remains basically the same if you're delayed.
Small corrigendum: Piccadilly line should also have **
Another way of comparing the costs of getting to and from Heathrow is to consider the cost of time. People have different values of times and Department of Transport uses this in assessing transport schemes - so for leisure trips to the airport the value of time is roughly £5 an hour and for business travel is £22 an hour.

Adding the ticket price to the value of time changes the order of attractiveness of each mode of transport - so for the leisure passenger travelling in the peak
the approximate "cost" of a trip to Heathrow is

Piccadily line £9
Nightbus £9.90
Heathrow Connect £12.90
Bus £13.10
Coach £14.30
HEX £26.30
Taxi £73.30

However for the business traveller the "cost" of the same trip is

Heathrow Connect £21.25
Picc Line £21.50
Coach £28.25
HEX £30.50
Nightbus £32.20
Bus £50.80
Taxi £87.25

Once you factor in wait times, crowding, access times etc the situation becomes even more complicated but demonstrates why so many modes of transport serve the airport
I wonder which two bus trips complete the way from Heathrow to Zone 1.
Err the peak PAYG from Z1 to H'row on TfL Rail will be £12.10. The Connect peak fare is £12.70 (£10.30 + £2.40 PAYG for the tube).

(numbers taken from the Mayoral Decision MD2245).
@Patrickov I don't think it can be done in two buses - X26 to East Croydon and then the 468 to Elephant & Castle doesn't really count as E&C is a boundary point. There are several three-bus possibilities (e.g via Shepherds Bush and Hounslow) but although the Hopper is no longer restricted to one change, you probably can't get from Zone 1 to any suitable second change point before your hour is up.
You could get from somewhere like Lancaster Gate to Heathrow for £1.50 although you'd be cutting it fine. Looking at the timings for a midday departure, you could do 94/148 to Shepherd's Bush, then 607 to Southall in 62 minutes (including enough time to walk between stops at the Bush) - bearing in mind the Hopper fare actually gives you 70 minutes rather than the advertised 60, you'd have 8 minutes to walk to the 105 stop and hope that a bus turns up immediately. I wouldn't want to rely on it, but it's not impossible.
Thanks @timbo and @Leo. I actually concern the other way round (i.e. Heathrow into Z1), as for the trip to Heathrow I would like to be as quick as possible (missing the late plane back can be catastrophic) that £22 wouldn't really hurt.
Heathrow Connect scores unduly well in this comparison as it does not take into account frequency.

Therefore I would propose adding half of the average time between 'sailings' for each method (i.e. practically zero for taxi, 1-2 mins for tube, 7.5 mins for HEX and (?) 15 mins for Heathrow Connect).
@Patrickov
Making use of the Heathrow Freezone, I think it can be done, in theory at any rate. Take any bus to the edge of the Freezone at Harlington Corner or Hatton Cross. That costs nothing and you don't need to touch in.

Then, buses 81 or 222 from Harlington or 482 from Hatton Cross to Hounslow West, followed by the H91 to Turnham Green can, according to Journey Planner, be done in less than an hour (50 minutes from Hatton Cross, a bit more from Harlington). With a bit of luck a 27 will turn up at Turnham Green before your hour is up and then you're away - right through Zone 1 and out to Chalk Farm if you so desire.
If you're travelling with two large suitcases, you're doing it wrong anyway.

Last but one trip to London, I was on business. I took the Heathrow express. I got suckered into buying the ticket from the dude in the airport. No real worries since it was all expensed.

Last trip was with the family and I knew better and took the tube. Much better option.
I've only taken the Heathrow Express once, and even though it was on expenses, I still felt like I'd been ripped off.
how will TfL Rail/Crossrail work with travelcards / price capping ?

btw, HEX can be as cheap as 5.50 gbp (weekends, booked 90 days in advance). but mostly not!
The announcement says the fares to Heathrow will count towards the appropriate cap (£12.50). There will not be a higher one set for Heathrow, even though the individual fares will be higher. As was pointed out on London Reconnections:
"Travel by Heathrow Express and you pay £25 just to Paddington.
Travel on Crossrail (Lizzie/ whatever) and you can get all your travel for the whole day for half that amount."
