DG - you are one of London's modern cultural chroniclers. Thank you for another interesting and informative post.

There is a very fine description of the fair in 'The English Fair' by David Kerr Cameron 1998 where the author describes how the ships block-maker Daniel Day stipulated that the people had to arrive from Wapping by boat - which they did because they built one called The Maggot (something to do with ship's tackle apparently) and sailed it down the Mile End road through Stratford (on wheels obviously). In 1952 someone dug up the remains of this vessel in a garden in Romford. Daniel Day had a coffin made out of one of the fallen branches of the tree - in which he used to lie whilst still living and was buried in it at Barking. St Pancras church pulpit is supposed to be made out of the tree.

I guess in the jargon of modern Las Vegas they'd have said: :What happens in Fairlop stays in Fairlop!"

lol!

If you return later in the year, the replacement cycle track for Eastway, demolished to make way for the Olympics (relocated to Hog Hill,Fairlop) should be open. But at present some Great Crested Newts have to be rounded up...

Thanks for letting me know that Als had closed down. I was pondering taking the kids there. Although, to be honest when I last visited a couple of years ago, it did seem a little sad.

Most of the clientelle have probably decamped to Epping's Kids Corner.

Why am I telling you this? No idea.
