Really good post, thanks DG.

Very interesting report. Glad you went, as I had hoped to go myself but was unable to get there, thanks to you I now have an idea what it would have been like.

That sounded an excellent day out!

Sad I know, but I once drove to Gravesend with kids, took a look at Pocohontas's grave and then hopped on the ferry to Tilbury.

It's a 20/25 minute walk into the town centre which is a fascinating example of awfulness.

The human excrement left in the doorway of the chippy certainly did not make us feel like dining in there, so we wandered back to the ferry and were conveyed back to the land of the living.

I've never been so glad to arrive in Gravesend -- and there aren't amny people that can say that.

Chris should have turned right after leaving the ferry towards the fort and enjoyed the World's End pub and its garden, which used to be a (very extended) lunch hour outing for the office when I worked in Gravesend.

At that time, about 15 years or so ago, I also remember a community opera being staged on the ferry and inside the disused ticket hall - atmospheric but hopeless acoustics.

Damn!

Can one go into the old bit of the cruise terminal normally, or is it normally locked up?

LOL @ drama in the Cruise Terminal photo page.

How does one Tilbury mill manufacture a significant proportion of southeast England's bread? Do they have a monopoly on the supermarket bakeries or something?

Jealous!

I took the ferry over the Thames many year ago when the Riverside station was still open, one of those 'because it's there' journeys that I'm glad I made!

I’ve had the experience of departing from Tilbury in a big ship, back when it was the gateway to the rest of the world. It was an exciting place in those days.
The people who were seeing you off were allowed on board to have a good look round the public areas, no security checks, just a loudspeaker announcement before departure saying it was time for visitors to go ashore, and then lots of waving and cheering and the ship’s hooter blaring as we got under way.

I've seen Tilbury Fort from above a few times on the way into City airport. I keep meaning to go, but it never seems to be open on the days I fancy visiting. At least I now know what else to look out for when I eventually get there!

Radio Caroline still broadcasts, via the internet and on satellite(if you know how to tune in a reciever) and this weekend celebrates their 48 th birthday.

Lucky man, DG. I am envious. Mike Ostler is a great guy. He knows all about the Bata Shoe factory & village at East Tilbury too. The Eastern National no 53 bus route used to terminate at the Ferry, and run all the way to Clacton via Chelmsford, but talking to a driver from the early 60s only yesterday, they used to change over half way and not do the whole route.
