...and thanks to Hannah for sparking the idea.
Such a curious cultural difference ... Even in the burbs in oz you can get a semi-decent coffee and it isn't considered elitist in any way.

Cue reverse snob making comment about the higher merits of instant in hot water in five, four, three...
And I believe it's the antipodeans who brought fancy coffee over here - isn't the Counter (first place I'd seen in Tower Hamlets to serve Flat Whites) run by Aussies?
Dunno.. I reckon the Italians brought it first, and the Americans and Aussies who popularised it. One thing I have noticed over the years is that the flat white has appeared on menus. In the past we had to order cappuccinos or lattes if we wanted a coffee with milk. It was only on our last trip that we saw flat white commonly on menus. I now know that is an Aussie invention ... Next I want to teach the Italians!
You mean it's not called Deli Boy?
On the other side of the tracks Waitrose have to give away coffee to its customers.
Coffee houses I suppose are replacing Public Houses. I do not drink coffee or beer so it makes little difference to me.
i cant stand all these coffee houses. in crouch end, which used to have proper shops, there are 17 cafe places. this doesnt contribute to a healthy area. the reason there are so many is that the profit margin on a cup of coffee is huge. you pay £2.50 for a cup that costs them about 30p. rip off

id rather have real businesses that improve an area.
Roman Road Art Cafe on FB https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roman-Rd-Art-Cafe/228137487347414
Just off the map. But a real puzzle is why there's so little (decent) coffee around the Limehouse basin. Or eateries. or even pubs.
There's The Grapes! (isn't there?)
I remember Roasters, hastily renamed Roastars, under the green bridge. I guess that's now the Costa?
Great post- there's also a new coffee shop on Grove Road near Subway. I think it's called the Coffee Rooms.

Have you seen that Antic are opening a pub on Devas Street (old Duke of Wellington)?

dg writes: The new gastropub has already tried spamming my comments, thanks. I passed by at the weekend. There's nothing very gastro yet about the boarded-up door and windows.
Carmelite Cafe definitely does the best FW in Bow. They've just had a refurb too.

Boulangerie Moulin on Roman Road is ok.
Can't stand coffee either or all this pretentious commuting with a giant beaker in hand (plus suit worn with trainers and without a tie to show how trendy you are).
Does anyone know of anywhere decent for a good flat white near Kensington High Street tube station? Please?
Roastars has been replaced by the less-coffee--focused Chez Pepi. I fear the new Costa opening opposite saw them off.
Regents Canal, you say.

As only a (semi-regular) visitor, Regents Canal is, to me, "the exit you DON'T want to mistakenly take when you leave Kings Cross tube". 'Cos it's a long walk underground, followed by another long walk to get back to where the "proper" exit would tip you out.

This suggests a possible series of easy blog posts, I guess. Standing at the mouth of a given station, what can be seen without walking anywhere.
When opening up your blog today on an iPad it immediately launches the google app which is mildly annoying ...
Pretty sure flat whites are a Kiwi invention. I just wonder who decided to serve the stuff in what are, essentially, buckets?
What's a flat white, and Would I like it?

I go for lattes. There is a lovely lady who runs a kiosk on Palmers Green station who doesn't remember your name but does remember what coffee you ask for.
I've added Boulangerie le Moulin on Roman Road, and "The Coffee Rooms" on Grove Road, thanks.

I walked past the latter this afternoon, and it's so new there are no signs up yet, or prices in the window. But there are pastries.
When I was a student in the 1950s South Kensington was overrun with espresso bars (ie cafes). My favourite was death-themed - black decor featuring little devils with pitchforks, hellfire etc. The atmosphere was surprisingly cheerful. Must have been all those grinning skulls adorning the walls.
"gentrification"...thought this word was ditched along with the term 'yuppies'. Still, anything that vastly increases property values can only be a good thing, right??
Stephen,

A flat white is basically a latte with less milk, therefore a stronger coffee flavour.
@John De La Cruz... The kiwis do try and take the kudos for anything invented in Australia, but in this case, I highly doubt it as it was only in the late 1990s that one could get a decent coffee outside of Auckland and maybe Wellington. In fact, espresso coffee was known in rural NZ as 'that Auckland muck' or 'that fancy stuff like you get in Auckland' until very recently. The flat white was a Sydney / Melbourne invention, although I do recall having it in Adelaide as early as the early 80s.
.. and while I am at it in a very general sense, and not directed at anyone here - it is so irritating when generally people write Australian / New Zealand as if we were one or connected. We are not, in any way, shape or form. I mean seriously, when I went to the Kew Gardens they had their 'Australian and New Zealand' Garden. Total facepalm, as the ecology of both nations is completely different. I would have thought that horticulturalists would have realised this. Grumble.
But where can you get a decent pot of tea?
