While the most of the registrar's functions take place in the cathedral of bureaucracy round in Reading Lane, some are still in the Town Hall. I got married in the council chamber in 2012 - though was a little preoccupied with a few of the other finer details of the day to properly appreciate its architecture. Hopefully our guests did!
Where Fassett Square provides inspiration for the Albert Square and the low rise houses of EastEnders, those on the parallel street of Clifton Grove are more akin to the town houses with heir steps up to the ground floor. Think Who Shot Phil Mitchell or Dr Legg popping up from his lower ground surgery.
What a fantastic gem of a building Hackney town hall is. It is great that old buildings are restored were practical, rather than demolished. Of course as Art Deco is my favourite style, so I might be a bit biased.
Two buildings I have been inside many times! In the 1970s/80s I reported on many council meetings from the Town Hall, so spent many hours sitting in the press seats, which you can see in your picture in front of the Mayor's dais. I also had a friend who was doing clinical research at the German Hospital, which was a psychiatric hospital at the time.
Wow. That's beautiful.
I do like the council chamber light. Looks like a contender for the dangly bit of the new "Art Deco" version of the TARDIS console room.
While Fassett Square may have missed out on Eastenders, the Bruno Court rooftop flat was used in the film adaptation of One Day. It was also up for sale recently - see link for interior shots http://www.themodernhouse.com/past-sales/bruno-court-london-e8/
The Town Hall is amazing.

But 'one of the only' - DG, for shame!

Sure, DG. But if anyone uses it in the written test which forms part of the selection process for the well-paid jobs we offer at my business, where clear writing is at the heart of the work; the application will go straight on the 'no' pile.

Express yourself as you wish: present yourself as you wish: expect to be judged on how you do so.
