Minor rant from me about FOI legislation legally obliging TfL to spend time (and someone's salary) answering this sort of thing. Probably not the original intention of FOI, which was more about stopping hospitals hiding high death rates or councils wasting money. Still interesting though, and for me a better use of someone's time than running TfL's Twitter account!
Andrew S: Unreasonably burdensome or 'vexatious' requests can be refused under the law. I think dg has covered this at some point.

dg writes: He knows this. He left a similar comment that time too.

This is the sort of data they will hold in their infrastructure database, and so a query like this shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to answer anyway. What if find more interesting is that they don’t already publish it on a “TfL fun facts” page
Do TfL consider the cut & cover sections of the Met line to be tunnels eg around Farringdon etc?
Well, who knew that the Met was 156,275 km long???
The 5% sounds strongly like just Baker Street to Finchley Road rather than measuring all the way from Aldgate.
I confess to a low grumpiness threshold on such things having had to prepare a number of responses myself where the only justification was "I'm entitled to know". Jimbo makes a good point; there's scope for TfL's social media/publicity people making far better use of this type of info either proactively or once it's been published anyway.
In reply to Jimbo:

We come here for TfL Fun Facts. No further complications needed.
Patrickov - The single track section from Chalfont & Latimer alone is about the same distance as Finchley Rd to Aldgate, albeit the former is single track so should count as half the share. And a huge amount (geographically, not tube map) is four track.
5% could easily be correct including Baker St to Aldgate.
Putters -- I used CULG for a rough reference to calculate exact trackage. The open section is around 143.6 km, while the Baker Street section is 6.78 km. Dividing the two yields 4.5%. I am afraid my feelings are rather founded.
The figures in the FoI response for Bakerloo (NR) and District (NR) are wrong. There’s a tunnel at Kensal Green (Bakerloo) and another between East Putney and Southfields stations (District). Possibly others on the Bakerloo.
The figures in the FoI are "not how you you would have defined it", which isn't necessarily the same as wrong.
I'm pretty sure that it's just the Richmond branch of the District that's the NR bit, the Wimbledon branch (including East Putney and Southfields) being LU.

If that is in fact the case, the District figures are not wrong in that respect.
Nice one dg with your barbed URL, however if I hadn't tracked down their take, including its passing reference to you, then I would have to have waited longer to learn about the forthcoming release of what I hope will be the next Aardman classic, Chicken Run 2 (Dec 15, but sadly only on a streaming platform for those who are interested).
