After the Olympics the stadium may well become another "Dome" situation.I hope not, better it gets a new owner/use quickly.
Wonder why it cannot stay 80000 and be used by West Ham football club, is it local residence objections?

It's all just a big waste of my money.

Nice closing line - worthy of a BBC special report!

I think th ebiggest white elephant stadium was Montreal's - they held the Olympics back in the 70's and the city's still paying off the debts! flickr.com/photos/31312856@N00/62003948

The smoked salmon factory has been relocated to a brand new building, most appropriately on Fish Island in Bow.
I'm sure Leyton Orient won't be overawed by the Olympic Stadium- they played several games at Wembley in 1930 when the former Rigg Approach ground at Lea Bridge did not pass muster

I don't understand the 25,000 capacity. Surely the best way to ensure money well spent is to do a deal with West Ham and make it at least 40,000?

It's a condition of the 2012 bid that London must build a stadium with "an athletics and community sports-for-all legacy", which involves keeping the running track. They can't just convert it into a big football stadium.

Personally, I'm dissapointed - we're well known in this country for radical, innovative design, and what do we get for an Olympic stadium - a glorified washing up bowl :|

I also don't understand the down-sizing aspect of the stadium. 25k seating is too much for athletics etc and not enough for rugby or football.

My own cynical view is that the main design principle for this stadium was 'fear' and 'doubt' - the organisers have zero bottle. Either go for it, or don't bother at all...

"There are few larger white elephants on this planet than Olympic stadia."

Not always. Atlanta built an Olympic stadium that had quite a few temporary seats. After the Olympics the stadium was easily converted into Turner Field (capacity of 50,000), home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Of course the Atlanta Olympic Organizing Committee had to be careful how they spent their money as there was no government (state or federal) that was guaranteeing to pay for any facilities.

Talk about misrepresenting what people say,

you wrote "No vitriolic rants or sighs of disappointment, except in the usual quarters", with a link to my blog. I made no reference to the design, so how can I be listed as someone who has made a vitriolic rant against it ?

I simply asked does anyone beleive it will cost £496 million in the end !

I wrote "No vitriolic rants OR sighs of disappointment, except in the usual quarters". You were a sigh of disappointment.

Talk about misrepresenting what people say.

I was not even a sigh of disappointment. Learn to read English. I liked the design, and made this clear in what I wrote. The only question I had was about the cost.

9/11/07: "I made no reference to the design"
10/11/07: "I liked the design, and made this clear in what I wrote."

Note to self: When someone orders you to "Learn to read English", stop reading.

I enjoy these verbal stoushes.
