Were you caught in the rain? Last time I went to the Isle of Wight it rained profusely.

dg writes: No. It didn't rain.
Thank you DG, that has brought back happy memories. It was an ideal place to visit on holiday with two young sons, who could play soldiers and defend the castle against an unseen enemy. On our visits the donkeys behaved themselves but loved being made a fuss of. Omg just thought, that was forty one years ago! 😳😳
"asinine rotation". Very witty.
For a great description of Carisbrooke Castle in the 18th Century- especially the Well house - read Moonfleet by J.Meade Faulkner.
Happy memories for me too. I was on a school trip from the North East. I was ten and it was 1961. What with the ferry it felt like being abroad. I think it's time for another visit.
Presumably the donkey-power was more reliable in olden days when cruelty was permitted. But given the fairly amazing equine feats which are still achieved without evident cruelty (horse racing, dressage, gymkhanas and the like) it does seem strange that Carisbrooke cannot always manage even a little bit of water-lifting. Or perhaps the management are not trying very hard.
